Software Test Engineer

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Software Test Engineer to join a highly skilled engineering team working on complex, high-integrity software and systems within the defence and maritime sector.

The role will focus on the delivery of software test activities throughout the software development lifecycle, including test planning, test management, execution, verification, and reporting.

You will work closely with software, systems, and integration engineers to develop logical, robust test solutions for technically challenging systems.

This opportunity would suit an experienced Software Test Engineer who enjoys working in a highly technical environment and wants exposure to complex defence, maritime, and safety-critical systems.

Key Responsibilities

As a Software Test Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning, managing, and delivering software test activities throughout the software development lifecycle
  • Developing robust manual, automated, and regression testing solutions
  • Producing test plans, test specifications, procedures, and supporting documentation
  • Performing software verification and validation activities
  • Supporting software and systems integration testing
  • Ensuring appropriate traceability between requirements, testing, and results
  • Identifying, investigating, and documenting software defects
  • Working collaboratively with software, systems, hardware, and integration engineering teams
  • Supporting the testing of high-integrity and safety-related software
  • Producing clear technical reports and communicating results to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of software testing processes and methodologies

Essential Skills & Experience

We are looking for candidates with:

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline
  • Proven experience supporting or leading software testing activities
  • Strong understanding of software testing within the software development lifecycle (SDLC)
  • Experience planning and delivering manual and regression testing
  • Knowledge of software engineering lifecycle processes and associated tools
  • Experience working with requirements and translating them into effective test solutions
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Good technical documentation and report-writing skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with technical specialists and non-technical stakeholders

Technical Skills

Experience in one or more of the following would be particularly beneficial:

  • Java / JavaFX / NetBeans
  • C++ / Visual Studio
  • Python
  • Automated software testing
  • Unit testing - JUnit / CppUnit
  • Requirements management - ideally IBM DOORS
  • UML / Enterprise Architect
  • IBM Engineering Test Manager / Workflow Manager
  • MATLAB
  • LabVIEW
  • SQL
  • HTML / JavaScript
  • Virtualisation
  • Network configuration and communications protocols
  • Agile software development

A strong bias towards either Java or C++ is absolutely acceptable; candidates are not expected to be equally experienced in both.
