Software Toolchain Developer

PE Global are currently recruiting for a Software Toolchain Developer for a 12 month contract role with a leading multinational Diesel Engine Manufacturing client based in Peterborough (Full time onsite).

Based in Peterborough, you’ll develop software, tools, and automation that support the toolchain and workflow for a large control system development team. Your work will help engineering teams improve software quality, increase automation, and make development and test workflows more efficient.

We’re looking for intellectually curious, motivated Computer Science or Software Engineering graduates who enjoy solving problems through software and automation. You’ll be keen to apply modern development practices in an engineering environment, working with others to create reliable, maintainable, and effective software solutions.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop software tools, scripts, and automation to support control system development.
  • Translate user and engineering needs into clear software requirements and development tasks.
  • Build, test, debug, and document software using modern software development practices.
  • Support automation of development, validation, and test workflows.
  • Use tools such as Git, Azure DevOps, Visual Studio / VS Code, CI/CD pipelines, GitHub Copilot, agentic workflows, and automated test frameworks.
  • Collaborate with engineers, developers, and testers to improve software quality, efficiency, and traceability.

Requirements

  • A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience or strong interest in software development, automation, and engineering tools.
  • Knowledge of coding, unit testing, debugging, code reviews, and version control.
  • Useful experience with Git, Azure DevOps, CI/CD, build pipelines, and modern development environments.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Clear communication skills and a collaborative team mindset.
  • An interest in applying software engineering to real-world control system development.
