Job Description
Purpose of the Role
To design, develop, and implement solutions to complex business problems, collaborating with stakeholders to understand their needs and requirements, and design and implement solutions that meet those needs and create solutions that balance technology risks against business delivery, driving consistency.
Accountabilities
- Design and Development of Solutions: As products that can evolve, meeting business requirements that align with modern software engineering practices and automated delivery tooling. This includes identification and implementation of the technologies and platforms.
- Targeted Design Activities: That apply an appropriate workload placement strategy and maximize the benefit of cloud capabilities such as elasticity, serverless, containerization, etc.
- Best Practice Designs: Incorporating security principles (such as defence in depth and reduction of blast radius) that meet the Bank’s resiliency expectations.
- Solutions Balancing Risks and Controls: To deliver the agreed business and technology value.
- Adoption of Standardized Solutions: Where they fit. If no standard solutions fit, feed into their ongoing evolution where appropriate.
- Fault Finding and Performance Issues Support: To operational support teams, leveraging available tooling.
- Solution Design Impact Assessment: In terms of risk, capacity, and cost impact, including estimation of project change and ongoing run costs.
- Development of Architecture Inputs: To comply with the bank's governance processes, including design artefacts required for architecture, privacy, security, and records management governance processes.
Vice President Expectations
- Strategy and Recommendations: To contribute or set strategy, drive requirements, and make recommendations for change.
- Resource, Budget, and Policy Management: Plan resources, budgets, and policies; manage and maintain policies/processes; deliver continuous improvements and escalate breaches of policies/procedures.
- Leadership and Team Management: If managing a team, define jobs and responsibilities, planning for the department’s future needs and operations, counselling employees on performance, and contributing to employee pay decisions/changes. They may also lead a number of specialists to influence the operations of a department, in alignment with strategic as well as tactical priorities, while balancing short and long-term goals and ensuring that budgets and schedules meet corporate requirements.
- Leadership Behaviours: People Leaders are expected to demonstrate a clear set of leadership behaviours to create an environment for colleagues to thrive and deliver to a consistently excellent standard. The four LEAD behaviours are:

- Subject Matter Expertise: For individual contributors, they will be a subject matter expert within their own discipline and will guide technical direction. They will lead collaborative, multi-year assignments and guide team members through structured assignments, identify the need for the inclusion of other areas of specialization to complete assignments. They will train, guide, and coach less experienced specialists and provide information affecting long-term profits, organizational risks, and strategic decisions.
- Stakeholder Management: Advise key stakeholders, including functional leadership teams and senior management on functional and cross-functional areas of impact and alignment.
- Risk Management: Manage and mitigate risks through assessment, in support of the control and governance agenda. Demonstrate leadership and accountability for managing risk and strengthening controls in relation to the work your team does.
- Comprehensive Understanding: Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the organization’s functions to contribute to achieving the goals of the business.
- Collaboration: Collaborate with other areas of work, for business-aligned support areas to keep up to speed with business activity and the business strategies.
- Analytical Thought and Problem Solving: Create solutions based on sophisticated analytical thought comparing and selecting complex alternatives. In-depth analysis with interpretative thinking will be required to define problems and develop innovative solutions.
- Research Inclusion: Adopt and include the outcomes of extensive research in problem-solving processes.
- Relationship Building: Seek out, build, and maintain trusting relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders in order to accomplish key business objectives, using influencing and negotiating skills to achieve outcomes.

As a Solutions Architect, you will play a key role in shaping the future of Barclays' digital and API ecosystem. Working across products, channels, and engineering teams, you will define and deliver scalable, secure, and innovative technology solutions that enable exceptional customer experiences and support our strategic objectives. Combining deep technical expertise with strong leadership and stakeholder management skills, you will drive architecture decisions, influence technology direction, and ensure solutions align with enterprise standards and business outcomes.
Essential Skills
- Proven experience designing and delivering API-led and integration architectures, including RESTful APIs, OpenAPI standards, event-driven solutions, and secure integration patterns (OAuth, OIDC, CIAM).
- Strong engineering background with expertise in cloud-native architecture, microservices, containerisation, DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and designing for resilience, performance, and security.
- Demonstrated ability to lead end-to-end solution architecture across complex programmes, defining target-state architectures, influencing technical direction, and driving architectural decisions across multiple teams and stakeholders.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills, with experience partnering with Product, Engineering, and Technology leadership teams.
- Experience operating within architecture governance frameworks and presenting solutions through architecture review boards and decision forums.
Desirable Skills
- Experience within Corporate Banking and Payments environments.
- A strong Product and Platform Architecture mindset, with the ability to balance business outcomes, scalability, and technical excellence.
- Experience designing and delivering event-driven and real-time architectures within complex enterprise environments.
Location
This role is based in Glasgow.
