FDM is a global business and technology consultancy seeking a Senior Solution Architect (Compute & Storage) to work for our client within the Financial Services sector.

This is initially a 6-12 month contract with the potential to extend and will be a hybrid role that will be based in London, Bristol or Edinburgh.

Our client is seeking a senior Solution Architect with deep expertise across enterprise compute, storage and infrastructure platforms to support a strategic programme of transformation and modernisation across its on-premise estate.

This individual will provide architectural leadership across infrastructure initiatives, defining target-state architectures, technical standards, roadmaps and solution designs whilst working closely with engineering, operations, security and vendor teams. The role requires a blend of strategic thinking and hands-on technical credibility, with a particular focus on resilient, secure and scalable infrastructure platforms.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the architecture and design of enterprise compute and storage solutions.
  • Produce High Level Designs (HLDs), reference architectures, technical standards and roadmap artefacts.
  • Define future-state infrastructure architecture aligned to business, operational and security requirements.
  • Provide architectural governance and technical assurance across infrastructure programmes.
  • Support platform engineering teams through design reviews, prototyping and implementation guidance.
  • Develop strategies covering capacity planning, performance optimisation, data lifecycle management and storage governance.
  • Design highly available, resilient and recoverable infrastructure solutions.
  • Drive standardisation, automation and operational efficiency across the technology estate.
  • Evaluate technology options and vendor solutions, providing clear recommendations and trade-off analysis.
  • Collaborate with architecture, engineering, security, operations and application teams to ensure successful delivery of solutions.

  • Experience operating within mature architecture functions and design authority structures.
  • Experience working within regulated industries and enterprise-scale organisations.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
