Job Title: Sous Chef
Salary: £14.42 p/h
Job Type: Part Year contract (30 weeks of the year) during term time hours, 37.5 hours per week (Monday-Friday)
Start Date: 7th September 2026 (Flexible)

What you will be required to do:

  • Work with the Executive Chef, to create and provide menu items at our Foragers Restaurant at Coach Lane Campus.
  • Work alongside the Unit Manager to ensure that menus are created weekly, maintain stock levels with efficient ordering and taking a lead on stock counts regularly to maintain targeted levels of GP for the Unit.
  • Lead Front of House staff where needed, ensuring that staff are following recipes and specifications for menu items, monitoring and delivering training where necessary.
  • Support Unit Manager in day-to-day operations for the Unit’s kitchen and during busy term time service.
  • Computer knowledge would be beneficial to create menu plans, allergens and print labels, log food wastage on our online platform, The Source, where training will be provided.
  • Help support managerial tasks if required, e.g., be a point of contact for the Unit’s staff in the absence of the Manager.
  • Orders should be fully accounted for when delivered and goods receipted on our food purchasing platform, Foodbuy Online.
  • In absence of the manager, ensure that takings for the unit are recorded on Nexus, with safe counts conducted correctly and takings uploaded online to Microsoft Teams.
  • Usual working hours will be 7am-3pm Monday-Friday. Occasional weekend or evening hours may be required for specialised events.

What is necessary:

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment during term time hours where the University is open
  • Ability to multi-task and plan time effectively leading to a well-run and smoothly ran operation in the Kitchen.
  • Ability to lead the Front of House team and provide support and/or development when needed, leading by example.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to learn tasks quickly
  • Previous experience working in a kitchen background – preferable if in education or hospitality
