Sous Chef – Walkers of Whitehall

Help us put Walkers of Whitehall on London's gastropub map.

We're looking for an ambitious, passionate Sous Chef to join the team at Walkers of Whitehall as we build an exciting food offer centred around seasonal British game, the freshest British seafood, and elevated pub classics.

Walkers of Whitehall is unlike any other London pub. Just moments from Trafalgar Square, our beautiful former bank is home to three unique spaces – from our lively main pub to the hidden Bank Vault dining room and bar. As part of Young's Pubs, we're investing heavily in our kitchen, menus and team, creating an exciting opportunity for a talented Sous Chef who wants to make their mark.

Working closely with our Head Chef, you'll help shape the direction of the kitchen, develop exciting seasonal dishes, and play a key role in establishing Walkers as one of central London's must-visit gastropubs.

What You'll Get

  • Access to our Sous Chef to Head Chef Development Programme – the majority of our Head Chefs are promoted from within.
  • The opportunity to create your own dishes and seasonal specials alongside the Head Chef.
  • Access to our Apprenticeship Scheme to gain nationally recognised qualifications.
  • Regular culinary masterclasses and development days.
  • Free meals whilst on duty.
  • 20% discount across all Young's pubs and hotels.
  • Company pension scheme.
  • Share Save Scheme.
  • 28 days' holiday.
  • The chance to work with a genuinely supportive, talented and fun kitchen team.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

What We're Looking For

Above all else, we're looking for someone who's a great person. We believe a positive attitude and being a team player are just as important as technical ability. We have a close-knit kitchen team and want someone who will enjoy being part of it.

That said, you'll also be an excellent chef with a real passion for quality British produce. Ideally you'll have experience in high-quality gastro pubs or restaurants, and classical training would be an advantage, although it's not essential.

You'll also have:

  • A passion for producing exceptional food and consistently high standards.
  • Experience leading, motivating and developing a kitchen team.
  • A hands-on approach and excellent communication skills.
  • Creativity to help develop seasonal menus and exciting daily specials.
  • A good understanding of food safety and kitchen compliance (we'll happily help you build on your knowledge).
  • A proactive attitude towards driving sales and continually improving the food offer.

Where this role can take you

This isn't just another Sous Chef position. We're looking for someone with ambition, and our aim is to develop the successful candidate into a Head Chef within the next one to two years. If you're ready to help build something special and progress your career with Young's, we'd love to hear from you.
