Sous Chef – Country Pub

Location: Kendal, Cumbria
Rate: £20ph self employed Invoice (a payroll rate can be arranged)
Position: Sous Chef
Hours: Ongoing work | 5 days out of 7 rota
Transport: Own transport essential
Accommodation: No live-in accommodation available

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Sous Chef to join the kitchen team at a welcoming country pub near Kendal.

This is an excellent opportunity for a reliable Sous Chef who enjoys working in a busy country pub environment, producing quality, seasonal food and supporting a strong kitchen team.

The Role

As Sous Chef, you will work closely with the Head Chef to ensure the smooth running of the kitchen and consistently high standards of food and service.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting the Head Chef with the day-to-day running of the kitchen.
  • Preparing, cooking and presenting dishes to a consistently high standard.
  • Taking responsibility for the kitchen in the Head Chef's absence.
  • Supporting and supervising junior chefs and kitchen staff.
  • Helping with menu preparation, specials and seasonal dishes.
  • Ensuring food preparation and service run efficiently during busy periods.
  • Maintaining excellent standards of food hygiene, cleanliness and kitchen safety.
  • Managing stock rotation, storage and portion control.
  • Monitoring food quality and minimising food waste.
  • Assisting with ordering and stock checks when required.
  • Following all food safety, allergen and health & safety procedures.
  • Helping to maintain a positive, organised and professional kitchen environment.
  • Working as part of the wider pub team to deliver excellent customer service.

About You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has previous experience as a Sous Chef, Senior Chef or strong Chef de Partie.
  • Is confident working in a busy pub, restaurant or country-house kitchen.
  • Has a genuine passion for good-quality food.
  • Can work well under pressure during busy services.
  • Is organised, reliable and able to lead by example.
  • Has excellent attention to detail and high standards of cleanliness.
  • Works well as part of a team but can also take responsibility when required.
  • Has a flexible approach to working hours and the demands of a busy hospitality operation.
  • Has their own transport and can commute to the Kendal area daily, as there is no live-in accommodation available.
