Job Description

Do you want to make a difference in your community while developing new skills and experiences?
We are now recruiting for places on a brand new Special Constable Training Programme commencing in May 2027. Developed using feedback from current Special Constables, this updated programme has been designed to provide a supportive and engaging learning experience for those looking to volunteer as a Police Officer.
The training programme is delivered over 15 weekends, and attendance at all sessions is mandatory. Applicants should carefully consider the training commitment before applying and ensure they are available to attend all scheduled dates. Please refer to the attached training timetable for full details.
About The Role
The last police officer you encountered may well have been a Special Constable.
Our Special Constables come from a wide range of backgrounds and professions. They may spend their working week managing projects, running their own business, working in customer service, driving trains, teaching in schools, or working from home. What connects them is a shared commitment to giving back to their communities by volunteering as Police Officers.

As a Special Constable, You Will
- Hold the Office of Constable and have full police powers, including powers of arrest.
- Work alongside regular Police Officers and police staff across a variety of frontline policing activities.
- Provide the same high standard of service expected from all officers.
- Use your communication, problem-solving and decision-making skills in challenging and rewarding situations.
- Support communities, protect vulnerable people and help keep the public safe.
We are looking for individuals who can communicate effectively, remain calm under pressure and are willing to work in situations that can be both mentally and physically demanding.
Training and Support
In return for your commitment, we will provide comprehensive training and ongoing support to help you develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to perform the role effectively.
You will learn from experienced trainers and officers and become part of a supportive team dedicated to delivering outstanding policing services across Avon and Somerset.

Candidates will be required to complete the following stages of the recruitment process:
- Eligibility checks
- Compulsory Familiarisation Event - where you will receive further information about the role and recruitment process. Candidates must attend one of the following sessions at Portishead Headquarters:
- National Sift
- Interview
- Pre-appointment checks - including vetting, fitness testing, medical assessment, substance misuse testing, biometrics, and references.

Additional Information
Special Constables are required to volunteer a minimum of 16 hours per month.
