Job Title: Specialist Biomedical Scientist

Contract Type: Fixed Term

Fixed Term Contract End Date: July 2027

Purpose for Fixed Term: Maternity / Shared Parental / adoption Leave

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated individual to join our team in the Specialist Biochemistry area of Laboratory Medicine on an 11-month fixed-term maternity cover basis.

Specialist Biochemistry performs a range of automated, semi-automated, and manual assays. Technologies used include Faecal Immunochemical Testing (FIT), Stone (calculi) analysis, Electrophoresis, ELISA, and Automated Immunoassay.

Standard working hours are 08:45 - 17:15 Monday to Friday, and there is no requirement to take part in a shift system.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

In this role, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Processing large volumes of routine biochemistry samples.
  • Supervision of junior members of staff.
  • Working within ISO 15189/UKAS (or equivalent) accredited laboratory standards.
  • Maintaining high standards of quality, accuracy, and turnaround times in a busy diagnostic laboratory.

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience

Essential criteria

  • HCPC approved Biomedical Science degree (BSc) or other HCPC approved degree/top ups
  • HCPC registered
  • Evidence of current CPD activities
  • Significant previous experience in a medical laboratory
  • IBMS specialist portfolio (in relevant discipline) or equivalent

Desirable criteria

  • IT competency (hospital IT systems, Outlook, Microsoft)
  • Experience in a large acute hospital laboratory
