We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.
The Role
The successful applicant will join a friendly team of Biomedical Scientists and support staff within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Biochemistry Services. The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day analysis, validation and reporting of patient test results from blood, urine, faeces, tissue biopsies, CSF and other body fluids across a range of routine and specialist laboratory sections. The role involves working with advanced laboratory instrumentation and scientific techniques to support the diagnosis, treatment, management and monitoring of patients. The department includes highly specialised services such as the Scottish Trace Element and Micronutrient Diagnostic and Research Laboratory (STEMDRL), Metabolic Biochemistry, Toxicology, Specialist Endocrinology, Point of Care Testing and Adult Specialist Services.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern
- Permanent Role - 28.8 Hours
- Location: Clyde Sector, covering Royal Alexandra Hospital, Inverclyde Royal Hospital and Vale of Leven Hospital.
- Working Pattern: Dayshift, Backshift, Nightshift, Weekend working (24/7 365 Rota)
Key Responsibilities
The post holder will provide a comprehensive Clinical Biochemistry service by analysing a wide range of patient samples using both manual and automated biochemical techniques. Responsibilities include:
- All stages of sample processing, analysis, validation and reporting
- Clinically authorising laboratory results
- Providing specialist advice to clinical and nursing staff
- Participating in Point of Care Testing services
- Maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment
- Preparing reagents and quality control materials
- Ensuring compliance with UKAS, health and safety and quality assurance standards
- Participating in research and development activities
- Maintaining HCPC registration and continuing professional development
- Contributing to the training of healthcare staff and colleagues within specialised laboratory disciplines

Knowledge, Training, Qualifications and/or Experience Required to Do the Job
- HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist is essential.
- BSc (Hons) Degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent qualification acceptable for HCPC registration.
- Completion of the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry or evidence of equivalent experience.
- Specialist knowledge in Clinical Biochemistry developed through CPD, seminars, specialist courses, in-house training and journal-based learning.
- Evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
- Experience of operating and maintaining complex laboratory analysers and instrumentation.
- Knowledge of quality control, quality assurance and laboratory accreditation standards.
- Good IT skills, including laboratory analyser software, quality control systems, data analysis packages and Microsoft Office applications.
- Effective written, verbal, organisational and keyboard skills.
- Membership of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) is desirable.
Candidates without a specialist portfolio may be considered for appointment under AFC Annex 21 terms and conditions and will start on a percentage of the Band 6 scale depending on experience. As specialist portfolios are a requirement for this post, they must be completed before progression to the full band 6 salary.
