An exciting opportunity has arisen for an ambitious, motivated, innovative and compassionate HCPC Registered Microbiology Biomedical Scientist, to join our friendly team in providing a quality microbiology service to our service users.
Requirements
To be considered for the Band 6 post you will need:
- HCPC registration
- Completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Microbiology or acceptable equivalent
- Experience of working in an NHS microbiology laboratory
Alternatively, applications will be accepted for a Biomedical Scientist (Band 5) post if the applicant does not hold the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Microbiology or acceptable equivalent. However, the applicant would be expected to undertake in-house training to obtain the IBMS Specialist Portfolio within an acceptable timeframe.
All Applicants Must Have:
- Experience of working in an NHS Microbiology Laboratory
- Valid right to work document to work in the UK
Interviews
Interviews will be face-to-face and held at the West Suffolk Hospital site.

The laboratory currently uses:
- BioMerieux BacT/ALERT
- Vitek 2 XL
- BioFire
- Bruker MALDI-ToF
- Diasorin Liaison XL
- Serosep EntericBio
- Cepheid GeneXpert
Role Responsibilities
- Processes specialist investigations in the department
- Provides specialist advice to clinicians as to appropriateness of tests and timescales
- Provides specialist service e.g. training, problem solving for specialist requirements
- Works independently and leads on specialist area as directed by Senior Biomedical Scientists (BMS)
- Acts as mentor for more junior scientific and support staff
- To work flexibly in reflection of service needs this may include an extended working day and/or participation in the delivery of a 24-hour, 7 days per week service
- Supervises and/or trains less experienced staff in own area of work
- The work of the service brings staff into constant contact with human body fluids, tissues, and hazardous chemicals. This may include blood, pus, urine, faeces, and respiratory secretions
- Maintain and promote professional image of the pathology department
- Where required, to lead and supervise a section of the laboratory
