Job Description: Specialist Grade Clinical Microbiologist / Infectious Sciences Doctor

Stockport NHS Foundation Trust and Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust are seeking a full-time (10 PAs) substantive Specialist Grade Clinical Microbiologist / Infectious Sciences Doctor. This is a new specialist grade post, established in line with the 2021 SAS doctor contract reform. The post holder will bring a strong commitment to high-quality patient care, clinical governance, innovation, delivery of performance targets, and training excellence.

About the Role

This is a cross-site post, with duties at both Stepping Hill and Tameside General Hospitals, providing microbiological and infection prevention and control advice to both Trusts and associated community and primary care services.

The post holder will develop close working relationships with clinicians and staff across both sites, encourage the safe and optimal management of infection, and support specialty training, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection prevention and control. There is a clear expectation to develop a specialist clinical interest and take a leadership role within the team.

Participation in both the workday and out-of-hours consultant clinical microbiology rotas is expected across the component Trusts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide laboratory liaison, expert microbiological and infection control advice, and antimicrobial stewardship across both Stepping Hill and Tameside General Hospitals, including clinical reviews on ward rounds.
  • Share oversight of specimen processing with consultant colleagues, validate and interpret results, and advise clinicians and GPs on diagnostic tests, antibiotic usage, and patient management.
  • Participate in ICU ward rounds, antibiotic stewardship rounds, and microbiology discussion meetings, and support the IPCNs in day-to-day infection prevention and control.
  • Communicate results and technical advice to all service users, maintain confidentiality, report incidents per Trust policy, and attend Directorate and Trust meetings, including SAE/SUI meetings as required.
  • Contribute to policy and service development, assist with UKAS compliance, develop a specialist clinical interest, and take a leadership role to support safe, effective service delivery.
  • Assist in training junior medical staff.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
