Specialist Learning Support Assistant - SEND
Location: Exeter, Devon
Contract: Full-Time | Term-Time Only
Start Date: January
Some Pupils Need a Different Way Into Learning
A classroom can be a very different experience for a child with additional needs.
Instructions can feel overwhelming. Transitions can be difficult. Communication may take more time. And sometimes what looks like challenging behaviour is actually a young person struggling to express what they need.
That's where skilled learning support can make an enormous difference.
We're looking for a Specialist Learning Support Assistant to join a supportive education setting in Exeter from January.
You'll help children and young people overcome barriers to learning while developing the confidence, communication and independence they need beyond the classroom too.
Supporting the Individual, Not Just the Lesson
Pupils May Have a Range Of Needs Including
- Autism (ASC)
- ADHD
- SEMH
- Speech & Language Needs
- Moderate Learning Needs
You'll get to know the individual pupils you support and understand the approaches that help them participate successfully in education.

Your Role May Include
- Providing targeted 1:1 and small-group support.
- Breaking learning activities into achievable steps.
- Following individual education and support plans.
- Adapting resources to suit different learning and communication needs.
- Supporting emotional regulation and positive behaviour.
- Helping pupils manage routines and transitions.
- Encouraging communication and positive social interaction.
- Building confidence without creating unnecessary dependence.
- Supporting activities outside the classroom, including educational visits.
- Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists and support staff.
- Sharing observations and contributing to reviews of pupil progress.
What Are We Looking For?
We're particularly interested in people who have experience supporting children, young people or individuals with additional needs.
You could already be working as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, SEN TA, Support Worker, Youth Worker or Behaviour Mentor.

- Positive and encouraging.
- Comfortable working as part of a multidisciplinary team.

You'll need to drive and have access to your own vehicle, as this will be important for accessing the setting and supporting the requirements of the role.
An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one, will also be required.
