About the team and what we do
The Specialist Casework and Complex Cases Team (SCCT) manages some of the most complex, sensitive and high-profile fitness to practise cases within the organisation. These cases often involve significant stakeholder interest, Public Inquiries, and matters that attract national media attention. The team works closely with colleagues across the organisation, including media and executive functions, to ensure cases are managed proportionately, fairly and with a person-centred approach.
As part of an evolving structure, this newly created role will support a dedicated maternity workstream, helping to ensure that complex maternity-related cases are managed effectively while maintaining the highest standards of public protection, customer care and operational excellence.
Your role and impact
As Specialist Maternity Manager, you will provide operational leadership and oversight of complex and sensitive fitness to practise cases. You will work collaboratively with senior colleagues, lawyers and stakeholders to ensure cases progress efficiently, risks are managed appropriately, and service standards are consistently met.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the operational management of complex and sensitive fitness to practise cases.
- Managing team workflow and ensuring cases are progressed proactively and effectively.
- Acting as an escalation point for complex issues and complaints.
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including those with differing interests.
- Leading stakeholder engagement and supporting case-specific communication plans.
- Working closely with media colleagues on cases attracting public, media or political interest.
- Driving continuous improvement through quality assurance, stakeholder feedback and service development initiatives.
- Providing leadership, coaching and performance management to team members.

What you’ll bring
We're looking for an experienced operational leader who can confidently manage complex situations while supporting colleagues and stakeholders with empathy and professionalism.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey complex or sensitive information clearly, confidently and empathetically.
- Strong planning, organisational and problem-solving abilities.
- Experience prioritising competing demands and working to strict deadlines.
- Sound knowledge of data protection, information governance and confidentiality requirements.
- Strong stakeholder management and relationship-building skills.
Please note that this role requires you to review and work with sensitive and distressing material relating to fitness to practice cases and you will be given the appropriate support to deal with this material.

Additional Information
The role you are applying for is a flexible role, and whilst you will be posted initially to a team, this may require movement between teams as the flow of work dictates. You will of course understand that this flexible approach enables us to provide the best possible service to our registrants and reach the outcomes to our cases quickly and within a reasonable timeframe. This will not change your terms and conditions and will be discussed with you prior to you taking up the post.

Hybrid Working Policy
We are currently working to a policy of office attendance for two days per week with the rest of the time working from home. Before submitting your application, please ensure you are able to commit to working in one of our office locations twice per week. If you are applying for a part-time role, please pro-rata office attendance based on the number of days you would be working.
Our Pay Policy
It is expected that staff new to the NMC will ordinarily be appointed to the bottom of the relevant pay band. However in exceptional circumstances, it may be possible to offer a salary above the bottom of the relevant pay band but we may request proof of current earnings. Please note that we offer an annual review of salaries and adopt a generous progressive pay approach. Further details of which are available on request.
