About the Role
This is a new, key role in developing and maintaining high standards of care for women and birthing people suffering from grief/loss, trauma, or tokophobia in pregnancy and the postnatal period and their families. You will contribute to the implementation of the new Maternal Mental Health Service for University hospitals Tees.
You should be passionate about developing and moving the service forward in line with key recommendations, local, and national agenda. You will have a high level of relevant expert knowledge and skills which you will use to develop, lead, and manage care for pregnant and new mothers with mental health needs, working alongside specialist psychologists and other healthcare professionals.
Responsibilities
- Provide a service of extra support and care, working in partnership with maternity and mental health services.
- Care will be based on individual needs, and you will work closely with women and birthing people and families to ensure that psychological support from psychologists is supported by midwifery care in partnership.
- Provide professional leadership and work closely with existing specialist midwives and the wider maternity system to ensure women and birthing people in the Tees Valley region have access to high-quality maternal mental health care.
- To provide expert care to all women and birthing people requiring mental health support.
- To actively promote the development of the Maternal Mental Health Service.
- To take responsibility alongside the psychology service for the management of the Maternal Mental Health Service and the necessary data collection, governance, and reporting.
- To ensure the department provides excellent standards of clinical practice and a culture focused on patient engagement and experience, liaising with the MNVP.
- To ensure that you are a visible member of the senior team and that you are accessible to patients, families, and carers.
- To promote positive, professional leadership to ensure contemporaneous, safe, and cost-effective midwifery care in accordance with the Trust’s Nursing and Midwifery strategy and national strategies including ‘Compassion in Practice’ (6C’s).
- To maintain an environment in which operational excellence, learning, research and development, and innovation are encouraged.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
