Job Introduction

Develop Your Specialist Expertise Within a County-Wide Learning Disability Service

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated Occupational Therapist to join our Learning Disability Service, supporting adults with learning disabilities who present with complex health, behavioural and mental health needs.

You will work as part of an integrated multidisciplinary team, providing specialist occupational therapy assessment and intervention while contributing to positive outcomes for service users. With access to regular supervision, ongoing professional development and support from experienced clinical leaders, this role offers an excellent opportunity to further develop your specialist skills and career.

Base: Flexible across Marlborough, Chippenham, Warminster or Salisbury

Hours: 30 hours per week

Working Pattern: Hybrid working model (approximately 60/40), dependent on individual and service needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hold professional responsibility for a designated caseload of adults with learning disabilities, autism and complex health needs.
  • Provide specialist Occupational Therapy assessments, interventions and evidence-based care planning.
  • Apply advanced clinical reasoning and specialist skills to support individuals with complex physical, behavioural and sensory needs.
  • Work collaboratively within a county-wide multidisciplinary team and alongside external partner organisations.
  • Monitor, review and evaluate intervention outcomes, adapting approaches as required.
  • Support and supervise junior staff, delegating work appropriately and promoting professional development.
  • Deliver education and training to clients, carers and healthcare professionals.
  • Support the Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist with service planning, prioritisation and operational leadership, deputising where required.

Skills, Experience and Attributes

We are seeking an experienced Occupational Therapist with the clinical expertise, leadership skills and passion to support adults with learning disabilities and complex needs within a specialist community service.

Essential Criteria

  • Degree/Diploma in Occupational Therapy and current HCPC registration.
  • Sensory Integration training or willingness to complete recognised training.
  • Significant post-registration experience within learning disabilities or a related specialist field.
  • Experience supporting adults with profound and complex needs.
  • Ability to manage complex clinical situations and demonstrate advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Experience supervising, mentoring and developing others.
  • Strong multidisciplinary and multi-agency working experience.
  • Experience contributing to service development, audits or quality improvement initiatives.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and influencing skills.
  • Competence across a broad range of Occupational Therapy interventions.
  • Strong organisational, prioritisation and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and use evidence-based practice.
  • Full driving licence and access to transport.

Desirable Criteria

  • BAOT/RCOT membership.
  • Specialist interest group membership.
  • Postgraduate qualifications or advanced specialist training.
  • Leadership and management development.
  • Experience teaching and assessing in practice.
  • Experience of NHS Continuing Healthcare processes.
  • Experience prescribing specialist equipment and adaptations.
