Main duties of the job
This is an exciting opportunity to join our team in the Adult Sleep Team at University Hospital Southampton (UHS). Our sleep service is looking for a Specialist Sleep Physiologist (Band 7) to join the team. This is a parental leave cover, offered as fixed-term (4 months) and part-time (22.5h). As a service we accept referrals for sleep-disordered breathing, parasomnias, circadian rhythm and movement disorders, and work closely with other specialist areas (such as NIV and neurology services), to offer a multidisciplinary team approach to our patients.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the Sleep Physiology Team and Consultants in delivering an efficient service to our patients. You will carry out and report on complex and non-complex sleep studies such as:
- Overnight Oximetry
- Cardiorespiratory Sleep Studies
- Polysomnography
- MSLT/MWT
- Actigraphy
- Capillary Blood Gases
You will offer continuous support, advice and follow up to patients on long term CPAP/ASV therapy. The candidate will chair our MDT meetings, triage referrals and discuss results with patients, draw therapy plans and produce clinical letters to referers as required. The candidate will deputise for the Lead Sleep Physiologist and support with the daily management of the service and team, line-managing staff as required. The candidate will play an active role in the teaching and training of staff and other trainees within the service.

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience
Essential criteria
- BSc in Clinical Physiology (Respiratory and Sleep) or another relevant degree associated to significant and relevant clinical experience.
- Accredited Sleep Physiologist (RPSGT or ESRS) or willing to work towards it.
- AHCS or HCPC Registered as Clinical Physiologist/Scientist in Respiratory and/or Sleep
- Evidence of continued professional development
- Experience working in adult sleep services.
- Experience performing, analysing and reporting complex and non-complex sleep investigations.
- Extensive knowledge and experience establishing, reviewing and troubleshooting complex and non-complex patients on CPAP, offering specialist advice.
- Experience delivering front-line patient care through physiologist-led clinics within the NHS or other healthcare provider.
- Experience providing informal and formal training to junior staff, trainees and carers
- Experience supervising/managing staff
- To have the skills to interpret clinical and scientific results and form a judgement on their significance.
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of current legislation and regulations pertinent to working area and the protection of staff, patients and members of the public.
- Knowledge of governance issues including ethical and regulatory considerations.
- Good scientific writing and presentation skills, including the production of abstracts, case-reports and conference presentations.

Desirable criteria
- PgDip/MSc in relevant subject or equivalent specialist experience and knowledge
- Experience in establishing, reviewing and troubleshooting patients on ASV/NIV.
- Experience performing, analysing and reporting PSG and actigraphy.
- Experience in producing protocols, SOPs and training plans.
- Experience participating in research and audit
