Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for,

• Undertaking a varied General and Paediatric Ultrasound caseload, adapting examination techniques to individual patient needs to produce high-quality diagnostic images and support accurate diagnosis.
• Independently interpreting ultrasound examinations, producing clear reports and making appropriate recommendations or referrals for further assessment.
• Providing compassionate, patient-centred care, communicating effectively with patients and carers and sensitively managing complex or sensitive information.
• Contributing to the effective delivery and development of the service through education and training, quality assurance, audit, service improvement and multidisciplinary team working.

What Experience/skills Are Needed

• A professionally registered Sonographer holding a CASE-accredited qualification or equivalent.
• Demonstrable experience in General and Paediatric Ultrasound, with the clinical knowledge and practical skills required to undertake a varied diagnostic ultrasound caseload.
• Ability to interpret ultrasound images and produce accurate, timely and clinically appropriate reports using sound professional judgement.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to continuing professional development, quality improvement and supporting the education of colleagues and students.

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience

Essential criteria

• Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Ultrasound
• Appropriate Professional Registration e.g. HCPC, RCT or NMC Registration
• Appropriate relevant Degree or equivalent.
• Appropriate post qualification experience in an ultrasound department
• Relevant clinical courses
• Completed the preceptorship and capability framework for sonographers’
• Quality assurance supervision and practice
• Sound knowledge of all areas of Governance including H&S, COSHH, Manual Handling
• Experience of teaching, mentoring and supporting colleagues training and development.
• Be able to interpret clinician’s requirements, to recognise the urgency of ultrasound requests, prioritise requests and determine the appropriate scanning technique, ensuring that scans are performed in accordance with best practice and research-based evidence.
• To interpret scans and provide a comprehensive, independent, diagnostic report on the patient’s condition and make the appropriate diagnosis.
• Leadership or management course or qualification or equivalent experience.
• To be able to respond appropriately to distressed patients and staff and distressing circumstances e.g. suspected physical abuse, major trauma, cancer and death.
• Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable criteria

• Evidence of presenting or publishing local audit, research, or case studies.
• Trained and experienced in more than one area of ultrasound
• Experience of audit and research
