Children’s Integrated Speech and Language Therapy Service
The Children’s Integrated Speech and Language Therapy Service for Hackney and the City is a unique partnership between health and education and has grown into a large dynamic team that delivers innovative models of working. It is a welcoming, fun and supportive place to work. This post is part of our service to Special Schools, Complex Needs and Autistic children.
Current Allocation
The current allocation for this specialist speech and language therapist post is:
- Ickburgh Special School
- Complex Needs Specialist Support (communication, AAC and dysphagia)
As a specialist speech and language therapist, in the future you may work across sessions in:
- Specialist Settings
- Some mainstream schools (most often with autistic and complex children).
It is an excellent chance to be part of an exciting and growing SaLT network within this clinical area raising awareness of SLCN and providing holistic, relevant and functional support to children, and the professionals around them. Preferences will be discussed at interview, and the exact combination of the post will be dependent on interest, experience and service need.
Duties
The sessions will as part of the Complex Needs, Autism and Special Schools service. In special schools this will be with primary and / or secondary/post-16 age students. Main duties across special schools and Complex specialist support include:

- Provide specialist assessment, diagnosis and intervention for children and young people with dysphagia, speech, language and communication needs across community, education and specialist settings.
- Work collaboratively with families, schools, nurseries and a multidisciplinary team to deliver integrated care and empower others to support children's communication and feeding needs.
- Lead and contribute to multidisciplinary planning and management of complex cases, ensuring high-quality, evidence-based practice.
- Support the development of the wider workforce through supervision, joint working, training and clinical education of therapists, assistants, volunteers and students.
- Build strong partnerships with parents and carers, ensuring they are fully informed, involved and equipped with strategies to support their child.
- Contribute to service development by identifying emerging needs, advising senior clinicians and managers, and supporting continuous improvement of specialist children's speech and language therapy services.
