Brighton College Specialist Tradesperson (Electrician) Job Description

Job Overview

Brighton College is seeking to appoint an Specialist Tradesperson (Electrician) on a full-time, permanent basis.

Reporting to: Deputy Head of Facilities Services (Maintenance)

Main purpose of the role: To provide expert electrical maintenance, repair and installation services across the estate, ensuring safety, compliance, and operational efficiency. The post holder will also support general maintenance tasks where appropriate, contributing to the effective upkeep of buildings and systems.

Specialist Tradesperson General Duties And Responsibilities

Electrical Duties

  • Carry out planned and reactive electrical maintenance and minor installation works in accordance with current IET Wiring Regulations (BS7671).
  • Diagnose and repair electrical faults in systems such as lighting, power, emergency lighting, heating controls and distribution boards.
  • Perform statutory inspections and testing (e.g. emergency lighting, PAT testing).
  • Complete and maintain accurate records, test sheets and certificates to support compliance with legislation and audit requirements.

Maintenance Duties

  • Undertake basic tasks in other trade areas (e.g. general maintenance) to support the wider maintenance team.
  • Assist with minor works, refurbishment, and lifecycle maintenance projects.

Compliance and Safety

  • Ensure all work complies with current electrical, health and safety and building regulations.
  • Conduct risk assessments and adhere to method statements and safe systems of work.
  • Identify and report hazards, defects or required upgrades promptly.
  • Work safely at heights or in confined spaces as required, using appropriate equipment and PPE.

Specialist Tradesperson Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation or equivalent.
  • City & Guilds 18th Edition (BS7671).
  • Experience in electrical maintenance, fault-finding, and repair in commercial or institutional settings.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of relevant legislation (e.g., Health & Safety at Work Act, Electricity at Work Regulations).
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and technical documentation.

Desirable Criteria

  • City & Guilds 2391/2394/2395 Inspection & Testing Qualification.
  • Experience working in an estates, healthcare, education or housing environment.
  • Knowledge of Building Management Systems (BMS), access control or fire alarms.
  • Competency in one or more additional trades.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Hours Of Work

  • Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 5.00pm with a 60-minute unpaid lunch break (40 hours per week).
  • After one month at the College, you will be expected to go onto the on-call rota for which you will be paid.

Specialist Tradesperson Remuneration

  • The salary for this role is £35,182 per annum.

Holidays

  • 23 days, plus bank holidays increasing to 28 days plus bank holidays after 2 years of service.
