CNWL is looking for a passionate and committed Speciality Grade doctor to join our Ealing service. Ealing RISE (Recovery Intervention Services Ealing) is a multi-agency, multi-disciplinary service, providing treatment to Ealing residents presenting with drug and alcohol problems.
The applicant will be an enthusiastic doctor who is keen to work with this marginalized patient group and can work collaboratively within a dynamic, innovative service and with our partner agencies. There are significant opportunities for personal development.
Main Duties of the Job
The post holder will work in the RISE community team based in Ealing Sector of the Addictions Directorate. The service is a partnership between CNWL NHS Foundation Trust and organisations from the third sector. These partners include a third sector organisation Change Grow Live (CGL), and a service user led organisations Build on Belief (BoB) providing recovery support /rehabilitating patients in the community. The Lead Contractor is CGL with CNWL subcontracted to provide clinical services.
The post holder will be an integral part of a large team that includes a Consultant Psychiatrist, Senior Psychiatry Trainee, another Speciality Doctor, NMPs, Nurses, Psychologists, Recovery Practitioners (care coordinators) and Outreach Workers.

Working for Our Organisation
CNWL’s Addiction Directorate is a large, well-established, multidisciplinary Service offering a wide range of high-quality addictions services. In addition to borough-based addiction treatment services, we also provide a club drug clinic, as well as gambling and gaming addiction services. The post holder will work in the RISE community team based in Ealing Sector of the Directorate.
The services are underpinned by the following principles:
- The treatment system has a clear and coherent vision and framework for recovery that is visible to people in treatment, owned by all staff and maintained by strong leadership.
- Purposeful treatment interventions are properly planned, assessed, measured, reviewed and adapted to an individual’s needs.
- ‘Phased and layered’ interventions are required that reflect the different needs of service users at different times.
- Opiate Substitution Therapy programmes are delivered that optimise the medication.
- Treatment services provide opportunities to service users to reduce and stop their substance use, improve their physical and mental health, engage with others in recovery, improve relationships, find meaningful work, build key life skills and secure housing.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
- To liaise closely with patients’ keyworkers, who will be primarily responsible for co-ordinating their care. The post holder may be required to hold a small caseload, although the post holder will primarily review existing patients collaboratively with their allocated keyworker. Follow-up reviews may be facilitated should the patient’s presentation change or require a care plan review.
- To provide clinical advice to team members on a 1:1 basis and within MDT meetings.
- To manage patients undergoing detoxification (either community or inpatient) for drug and/or alcohol dependence.
- To initiate, stabilise and maintain patients on opiate substitute treatment (OST).
- To undertake mental health reviews on patients.
- To provide health care appropriate to the patient’s physical health needs by examination and make appropriate referrals to medical colleagues/GPs.
- To provide support to designated and prospective Non-Medical Prescribers and work with the Addictions Lead Nurse to develop these roles and relevant governance arrangements.
- To participate in providing training to staff as well as students (medical, nursing and social work) attending the service.
- To liaise closely and communicate effectively with colleagues in statutory and non-statutory services concerning the treatment and management of our patients. This includes colleagues in settings such as primary care, the Acute Trust, mental health services, Adult Social Care and the Probation Service.
- To ensure that patients are assigned ICD-11 diagnostic coding and that these are properly recorded on the electronic patient record.
- To contribute to the completion of serious incident reports as required.
- To contribute to the completion of coroner’s reports as required.
- To support the service in achieving key performance indicators in accordance with Public Health England’s National Drug Treatment Monitoring Service (NDTMS).
- To maintain comprehensive contemporaneous documentation on the Service’s electronic patient record (CRIIS).

Education & Qualifications
Essential Criteria
- Full GMC registration and current licence to practice
Desirable Criteria
- Has obtained MRCPsych (or equivalent) qualification
Previous Experience
Essential Criteria
- Completed at least 1-year regular hospital or community based service at Foundation Year, core trainee (CT) grade or as a specialty doctor (or equivalent)
- Psychiatry training / experience of at least two years
Desirable Criteria
- Experience of working within a mental health inpatient or community setting
- Experience of working in addiction treatment settings
- Experience of prescribing opiate substitute treatments
- Experience of quality improvement
Skills & Knowledge
Essential Criteria
- Able to treat service users with respect and dignity at all times, adopting a culturally sensitive approach that considers the needs of the whole person
- Able to build constructive relationships with warmth and empathy, using good communication skills
- Able to complete medical and mental health assessments
- Able to plan treatment
- IT literacy
Desirable Criteria
- Competence in assessing and managing substance use disorders
