University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) invites applications for full-time, permanent Specialty Doctor posts in Emergency Medicine, working across Poole Hospital and the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.
The successful candidate will be a Senior Decision Maker (SDM) within the Emergency Department, responsible for complex clinical decisions, supervision of junior staff, and leading the department during night shifts when no consultant is present.
This is a 10 PA post: 8.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). The Trust can provide a Certificate of Sponsorship for Tier 2 visa applicants, and overseas EM experience will be recognised when determining the starting point on the Specialty Doctor pay scale.
UHD has a strong history of supporting doctors through CESR, with many progressing to substantive consultant roles. Successful applicants may join a structured CESR programme, which includes tailored development plans, rotations in key acute specialties (Critical Care, Anaesthetics, Acute Medicine, Paediatrics), and mentorship from CESR-qualified consultants. Participation is optional for candidates choosing to pursue training routes instead.

Clinical Care & Patient Management
Provide timely assessment, diagnosis, treatment, resuscitation and stabilisation of emergency patients, including performing essential ED procedures and making safe admission, referral or discharge decisions.
Leadership, Supervision & Multidisciplinary Working
Support and supervise junior doctors, students and wider clinical staff, while working collaboratively with consultants and specialty teams to ensure safe, effective patient care.
Education, Governance & Professional Development
Contribute to teaching and training, clinical audit, quality improvement, patient safety initiatives, policy development and morbidity and mortality reviews, while maintaining ongoing CPD and mandatory training.

Rota & Departmental Responsibilities
Participate in the Tier 4 rota, providing 24/7 emergency care across early, late and night shifts, and work as part of the Middle Grade ED team across RBH and Poole.
As part of our commitment to delivering high-quality care across seven days, this post may involve participation in an out-of-hours rota, including evenings, weekends, and/or bank holidays, in accordance with service needs. Any work undertaken outside standard hours/PA’s will attract remuneration in line with the respective NHS Medical and Dental Terms and Conditions of Service.
This role is eligible for reimbursement of relocation expenses, in accordance with the Trust’s applicable policies and guidelines.
