Job Summary

Applicants are invited to apply for a Specialty Doctor in Emergency Medicine post.

The post will be Emergency Medicine clinical care allowing an opportunity for doctors wanting to gain experience and responsibility in not just managing patients but managing a busy department (at Registrar level).

Main duties of the job

The post holder under the direction of senior colleagues will undertake the below duties, these are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.

  • Take a history and examine a patient
  • Identify and synthesize problems
  • Prescribe safely
  • Keep an accurate and relevant medical record (electronic notes)
  • Manage time and clinical priorities effectively
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues
  • Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care

Job Description

Job responsibilities

We are a busy DGH Emergency Department that sees a wide variety of presentations (in both adult and paediatric). We deal with medical, surgical, orthopaedic, paediatric and trauma patients. These patients can present and be assessed in resus, majors, minors or paediatric ED.

40% of the time will be spent undertaking departmental innovation/quality improvement projects. The ideal candidate will be a doctor who wishes to take time to do more leadership, education and innovation. You may wish to discover your leadership, management and influencing skills. You may have a passion to enhance your medico-associated skills such as development of new pathways, finding solutions to problems or systems design. You will be dynamic, self-driven and able to manage your time.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Fully registered with the GMC with licence to practice
  • ALS provider status
  • MRCEM or equivalent

Desirable

  • ATLS/ETC provider status
  • APLS/EPALS provider status

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Some experience within a specialty relevant to the role
  • EM experience.
  • Expertise in full range of medical conditions
  • Ability to help lead and supervise a multi-professional team and take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients

Desirable

  • Some experience at Middle Grade level in EM

Teaching and Research

Essential

  • Interest in leading multi-professional education
  • Ability to supervise post-graduate projects

Desirable

  • Publications in peer reviewed journals

Management Administration

  • Ability to manage priorities

  • Experience of audit/QI and management
