Job Overview
Job Title: Specialty Doctor in Emergency Medicine
Managerial Responsible to: Dr Jayne McKinlay (Clinical Lead, Emergency Department)
Professionally Accountable to: Dr Jayne McKinlay (Clinical Lead, Emergency Department)
Base/Department(s): Emergency Department
Location(s): Southmead Hospital
Job Plan: Proposed Job Plan is attached although the individual will be expected to work flexibly to fulfil high professional standards and contribute to Departmental and Trust priorities.
Main Duties of the Job
Clinical Duties:
- The appointee will be responsible for the clinical management of patients under their care, and, in liaison with consultant colleagues with demonstration of professional values as per the Good Clinical Practice.
Teaching and Supervision of Junior Medical Staff & Students:
- The appointee will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff. Where appropriate, the appointee will be named in the educational contract of junior staff as the person responsible for overseeing the progression of their career and as an initial source of advice to such doctors regarding their careers.

Person Specification
Qualifications And Training
Essential criteria
- Full and specialist registration in either AIM or GIM with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- MRCGP Qualification
- Minimum of 6 years’ medical experience since primary medical qualification
- At least 2 years NHS experience
- Ability to demonstrate the skills, knowledge and qualities required to work as a senior clinician through workplace-based assessments, e-portfolio evidence, supporting assessments or testimonials from previous departments
Desirable criteria
- ALS/ACLS certification
- EPALS/PALS certification
- ATLS/ETC certification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Minimum of 6 years’ medical experience since primary medical qualification
- At least 2 years NHS experience
- Ability to demonstrate the skills, knowledge and qualities required to work as a senior clinician through workplace-based assessments, e-portfolio evidence, supporting assessments or testimonials from previous departments
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of a special interest and expertise that complements those of other consultants in the department and is consistent with the Trust’s service strategy
Clinical Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria
- Up to date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty
- Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty
- Ability to teach effectively
Desirable criteria
- Broad range of IT skills
Clinical Governance and Audit
Essential criteria
- Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
- Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation
- Positive approach to evidence-based practice
- Evidence of recent and regular engagement with continuing professional development (CPD) scheme.
- Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues.
Research
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of the principles involved in research

Teaching and Training
