Looking for more than just work experience? If you're curious about how insurance is designed to protect against some of the world’s most complex and unusual risks, this could be the perfect way to spend your summer. From fine art, sport and entertainment to aviation, cyber and more, Howden Specialty brings together experts who create tailored insurance solutions for clients around the world. Join one of our Specialty Broking teams to discover how brokers understand risks, build relationships and connect clients with the right protection.
You'll gain exposure to some of the world's most complex risks, work alongside specialist brokers and build relationships across the London insurance market while developing the skills needed for a successful career in insurance.
The 10-week programme is designed to give you meaningful exposure to the world of insurance broking while helping you develop the knowledge, professional skills and confidence to kick start your career.
Better still, our programme offers a direct pathway into our Autumn 2028 graduate roles, subject to business needs and individual performance.
What you’ll be doing?
You will begin with a structured induction before joining one of our Specialty Broking teams to work alongside experienced specialists on real client projects.
You could be placed into one of the following teams:
- Jewellers - work with jewellers, luxury brands and precious metal businesses to arrange specialist insurance that protects valuable items against loss, damage or theft.
- Professional Services - help professional firms such as consultants and law firms secure insurance that protects them against risks arising from the advice and services they provide.
- Cyber - work with specialist cyber insurance markets to help organisations protect themselves against evolving digital threats such as cyber-attacks, ransomware and data breaches. You'll learn how complex cyber risks are assessed, structured and placed in the London insurance market while building relationships across a fast-growing global business.
- Directors & Officers - arrange insurance that protects company directors and senior leaders against claims arising from decisions they make while running a business.
- Marine - help businesses involved in global trade protect goods, vessels and operations that move by sea, air or land.

During the programme, you'll:
- Gain a good understanding of your team’s insurance specialist product and the industries they support.
- Build strong relationships with key underwriters, clients and colleagues across the business.
- Support with client requests such as updating insurance policies with amendments or changes.
- Work alongside experienced brokers to understand how risks are assessed and coverage is negotiated and client relationships are managed.
- Learn how insurance placements are structured by helping prepare insurance slips, which set out key information about a client's risk and the coverage being arranged.
Who are we looking for?
No insurance experience is needed; we’ll teach you everything you need to know!
You'll be:
- In your penultimate year of study from any degree background.
- A confident communicator who enjoys building relationships with others.
- Detail-oriented and committed to producing high-quality, accurate work.
- Curious about the world around you, with an interest in how global events, industries and emerging risks can impact businesses.
- Comfortable working in a fast-moving environment and able to stay organised while balancing multiple priorities.
- Able to take ownership of tasks and see them through to completion.
- Proactive, show initiative and eager to get involved in new tasks, projects and opportunities.
- Comfortable working with basic data and numbers.
To be eligible for our programme, you must have the full and unrestricted right to work in the UK.

- Online gamified assessment: We’ve created games that will help us understand your natural strengths and how you approach different situations. There are no right or wrong answers. You can complete this stage on your phone or laptop, whichever suits you best!
- Pre-recorded video interview: You will record your answers to a few questions using your phone or laptop, giving you the chance to tell us more about yourself in your own time in a relaxed setting.
- Assessment centre: Our final stage is an in-person assessment centre at one of our offices. You'll take part in some fun group activities and meet our team in a relaxed setting. This day is all about getting to know you better and for you to see what it's like to be part of Howden and experience our culture. We'll cover all your travel costs for this day, because where you are now, shouldn’t hold back your future!
