The role
Are you looking for an opportunity to make a real contribution to protecting Wales' wildlife while delivering excellent customer service?
A fixed-term opportunity has arisen for a Technical Support Officer within the Species Permitting Team, part of the NRW Permitting Service.
Reporting to the Species Permitting Team Leader, you will play a vital role in supporting a wide range of customers applying for species permits covering a variety of species and purposes.
As the first point of contact for applicants, you will respond to enquiries, process incoming applications and support the team with day-to-day case management activities, including finance and payment administration. The team prides itself on delivering exceptional customer service at every stage of the permitting process, and you will help ensure permits are issued in a timely manner while keeping applicants informed of progress throughout.
Your contribution will be instrumental in supporting the effective day-to-day operation of the Species Permitting Team, helping to ensure we continue to provide an efficient, courteous and professional service to our customers. You will also provide general administrative support, managing personal and sensitive information accurately and in accordance with established procedures.
This role is a fixed-term position until 28/02/2027.
As an organisation we support flexible working. You will be contracted to the nearest NRW office to your home and a suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment. Any regular face to face meetings or training will be planned in advance.

The Species Permitting Team issues permits covering a wide range of UK and European protected species. We work with a diverse range of customers, including members of the public, ecologists, developers, public bodies and commercial organisations.
The team plays an important role in supporting nature recovery by ensuring that permit decisions balance the needs of customers with the protection and enhancement of protected species. Through this work, we help deliver positive outcomes for Wales' wildlife and environment.

What You Will Do
- Plan workload to ensure that the logging and processing of species licences is completed within legislative deadlines.
- Support applicants with pre-application advice for various sites and species.
- Identify opportunities for changes to process and guidance needed to deliver efficient and effective permitting service and assist on co-ordinating the change as required.
- Undertake simple permitting activities including, but not limited to, processing admin amendment requests, transfers and withdrawals of applications.
- Develop and maintain effective customer relationships to ensure good understanding and the efficient delivery of the permitting process.
- Ensure that all relevant documentation is stored appropriately within the organisational document management systems.
- Undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post
- Be committed to Natural Resources Wales Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy, together with an understanding of how it operates within the responsibilities of the post
- Be committed to your own development through the effective use of your personal development plan (known as Sgwrs).
- Any other reasonable duties requested commensurate with the grade of this role.
Your qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills
In your application and interview you will be asked to demonstrate the following skills and experience using the STAR method.
- Ability to work within a team, the ability to establish and maintain networks, and the ability to communicate clearly, confidently and persuasively, both orally and in writing.
- Excellent organisational and administration skills and the ability to meet targets and work to deadlines.
- The ability to use word processing, spreadsheets, databases, e-mail, NRW intranet and internet in a Windows environment.
- Strong customer focussed approach to delivery.
- A basic knowledge of UK and European legislation relating to protected species and species ecology. (Desirable)

Additional Information
Successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS) check. Appointments are normally made within 4 to 8 weeks of the closing date.
Natural Resources Wales is unable to offer visa sponsorship for this position. Although we hold a Skilled Worker visa sponsorship licence, it applies only to specific roles that meet both the eligibility criteria and salary requirements set out by the UK Government under the Skilled Worker visa route.
