Speech and Language Therapist

Location: HMP Dovegate, Staffordshire, ST14 8XRS Salary: £37,412.50 – £38,629 per annum (pro rata), plus excellent benefits Schedule: Part-time – one day per week


About the Role

As a Speech and Language Therapist in our Therapeutic Community team, you will provide specialist assessment and intervention to support adults with complex communication needs within a secure environment. Your work will drive engagement in therapy, foster positive behaviour change, and contribute to long-term rehabilitation.

You will work within the Enhanced Assessment Unit, helping to create a more inclusive and effective therapeutic environment. By identifying communication strengths and needs—and supporting both participants and colleagues to respond effectively—your role ensures meaningful, lasting impact on individuals and communities.


Responsibilities

You’ll be entrusted to:

  • Deliver specialist speech, language, and communication assessments and formulations
  • Provide targeted, functional speech and language therapy to support:
    • Comprehension
    • Expression
    • Social interaction
  • Support participants in engaging with:
    • Therapy groups
    • Community meetings
    • Daily community living
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary colleagues by:
    • Offering consultation
    • Developing practical communication strategies
  • Identify communication-related risk and protective factors to support safer rehabilitation outcomes
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and engage in professional and clinical supervision

Requirements

You’ll be a great fit if you have:

  • A degree in Speech and Language Therapy, HCSPC registration, and HCPC registration
  • Experience delivering speech and language therapy to adults with complex needs
  • Confidence working within a multidisciplinary team and contributing specialist insights
  • A strong understanding of trauma-informed practice and its impact on communication
  • Clear, adaptable communication skills, emotional resilience, and sound professional judgement

Vetting and Checks

An Enhanced DBS check is mandatory. This includes:

  • Spent and unspent convictions
  • Cautions
  • Relevant police records (aligning with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and safeguarding requirements)

You will also complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire.
