Study in Wales forms a central part of the Welsh Government-funded Global Wales programme, which promotes international collaboration. Its sponsorship of the team underscores Wales’ commitment to building strong, long-term links with India.
Wales’s Minister for Further and Higher Education, Vikki Howells MS, said:
“International students are an integral part of our higher education community, and I greatly value the social, cultural, and economic contributions they make here in Wales. Through our Global Wales programme, we continue to support the international recruitment and promotion of Welsh universities. The Study in Wales brand sits at the heart of this work, showcasing our study opportunities to a global audience.
“This partnership with the Wales Women’s Hockey Team reflects the continued development of our relationship with India through sports diplomacy and demonstrates how sport and education can work hand in hand. A Welsh university delegation will also travel to Hyderabad during the qualifiers, where the Welsh Government will host a St David’s Day celebration at the Deputy High Commissioner’s Residence. The event will spotlight Wales’s vibrant education sector and the expanding partnership between Wales and India.
This latest collaboration builds on the success of previous partnerships, including Study in Wales’ support for the Wales senior men’s team during the 2023 Hockey World Cup in India.

A recent independent evaluation by Wavehill highlights the tangible impact of Study in Wales marketing activity.
- 91% of prospective students in India are more likely to consider studying in Wales after seeing Study in Wales campaigns.
- Interest in studying in Wales has nearly doubled—from 18% to 32%.
- Indian students hold the most positive view of Wales globally, with 89% expressing favourable opinions.
- Awareness of Wales has grown eightfold in just 3 years.
Against the context of challenging international recruitment environment, these results highlight the continued importance of initiatives such as Study in Wales.
Wales will take on India in a key qualifier on 11 March, promising an exciting match for hockey fans across both countries.
