Our PE & Sports Coach Apprentices

Our PE & Sports coach apprentices have an important role to play in improving the health & wellbeing of children by delivering fun, inclusive and engaging activities that help to change physical activity habits. The apprentice will support the delivery of PE in schools, deliver extra-curricular clubs and lunch clubs, and work in our holiday camps.

Wage £10,400 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices

Additional pay enhancements will be based on performance.

Hours - Monday to Friday - Weekend availability - Working hours TBC
25 hours a week

What you'll do at work

We are seeking a passionate Level 2 Sports Coach to join our dedicated team, supporting our delivery of high-quality PE, sports and physical activities.

This role is based in Kingston Thames, Great London (KT9 postcodes). Apprentices must have a reliable commute or plan to relocate before starting the role.

As a Level 2 Community Activator Coach Apprentice, you will play a key role in fostering safe, engaging, creative, and inspiring environments.

Duties to include:

  • Support the delivery of PE lessons alongside experienced coaches
  • Support/lead extra-curricular activities
  • Assist with school games competitions and events
  • Run/organise and support physical activity and engagement at lunchtime
  • Support the delivery of holiday camps and activities

We are looking to recruit an apprentice to join our growing team for the 2026/27 academic year. The successful candidates will train and develop with Moving Matters, building knowledge and confidence across a range of delivery areas. Our aim is to develop our apprentices into full time coaches within our workforce- progression to Level 4 Sports Coach apprenticeship upon completion of this Level 2 is an option for the right candidate.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for sport and PE, a strong work ethic, willingness to learn and excellent inter-personal skills.

We aim to develop our apprentices quickly, so they can take on responsibilities such as leading clubs and PE lessons in school and at camps.

Course contents

  • Promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and physical activity for individuals and communities.
  • Encourage individuals' participation, motivation and to change their behaviour towards sport or physical activity.
  • Contribute to inclusive, safe and effective sessions.
  • Plan, follow, adapt, and deliver session plans, based on participant needs and feedback.
  • Use coaching styles for sport or physical activity sessions meeting the participants needs and motivations.
  • Promote the benefits of a lifelong activity habit.
  • Use techniques to build rapport with participants.
  • Carry out the tasks required before, during and after a community activity.
  • Support participants to overcome personal or societal barriers.
  • Manage individuals' behaviours within a group setting.
  • Work collaboratively with services and other community organisations to run events that make the best use resources.
  • Record and store data and information, in line with legislation and organisational policies and procedures.
  • Use suitable digital technology to deliver targeted messages to participant groups.
  • Adapt communication methods to meet the needs of participants and groups.
  • Identify and respond to safeguarding concerns within own scope of role and in line with organisational protocols.
  • Support equity, diversity and inclusion in line with legislation and organisational policies.
  • Support the mental health and wellbeing of self and participants.
  • Comply with health and safety legislation, regulations, risk assessment procedures, guidelines and procedures.
  • Participate in personal and professional development.
  • Maintain professional boundaries within scope of own role.
  • Monitor and review the effectiveness of activity sessions.
  • Assist with the resolution of challenges and problems.

Training schedule

The training provider (Aspire Training Solutions) offers a blended learning delivery design which encompasses a range of methods to engage apprentices and offers a rich and exciting programme. Your training programme with them will involve:

  • Level 2 Community Activator Coach Apprenticeship Standard
  • Level 2 Award in Multi-skills Coaching/Development in Sport
  • Sector specific CPD, such as:
    • Supporting the PE curriculum
    • Behaviour Management
    • Practical PE Curriculum
    • Gymnastics
    • Dance
    • Safeguarding/prevention
    • Mental health and wellbeing
  • Functional skills in maths and English (where required)

You will receive dedicated study time and a skills coach to support with coursework and assignments

Professional recognition: On successful completion of the Standard, all Apprentices will be automatically given CIMSPA (Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity) at Affiliate Member level

Moving Matters allocate a mentor to work with you for the duration of the apprenticeship offering advice, support and guidance on both a work and personal level

Desirable qualifications

  • GCSE in:
    • Maths & English (grade C or 4)

Candidates must be confident and happy to travel to and from the school location(s) each day. Please only apply for this apprenticeship if the location suits your mode of transport and travel times etc. This post will involve physical activity so will require apprentices to be interested and passionate about sports and physical activity and have sufficient a level of fitness. Candidates will need to be eager to work with children to enable their participation in activity.
