Apprentice Sports Coach (swim specialism)

Delivering inclusive swimming sessions for children, schools, adults, and community groups across Birmingham pop-up pools and leisure sites. Supports lesson planning, delivery and review, holiday camps, SEND inclusion, events, and pool safety. Gain swim teacher & lifeguard qualifications.

Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

What you'll learn

Course contents

  • Promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and physical activity for individuals and communities.
  • Encourage individuals' participation, motivation, and to change their behaviour towards sport or physical activity.
  • Contribute to inclusive, safe, and effective sessions.
  • Plan, follow, adapt, and deliver session plans, based on participant needs and feedback.
  • Use coaching styles for sport or physical activity sessions meeting the participants needs and motivations.
  • Promote the benefits of a lifelong activity habit.
  • Use techniques to build rapport with participants.
  • Carry out the tasks required before, during and after a community activity.
  • Support participants to overcome personal or societal barriers.
  • Manage individuals' behaviours within a group setting.
  • Work collaboratively with services and other community organisations to run events that make the best use of resources.
  • Record and store data and information, in line with legislation and organisational policies and procedures.
  • Use suitable digital technology to deliver targeted messages to participant groups.
  • Adapt communication methods to meet the needs of participants and groups.
  • Identify and respond to safeguarding concerns within own scope of role and in line with organisational protocols.
  • Support equity, diversity and inclusion in line with legislation and organisational policies.
  • Support the mental health and wellbeing of self and participants.
  • Comply with health and safety legislation, regulations, risk assessment procedures, guidelines and procedures.
  • Participate in personal and professional development.

Training schedule

Our apprentices will receive weekly off-the-job training hours in order to engage with masterclasses, skills festival days, assignments, and tasks related to the apprenticeship, online CPD courses, and development sessions with their allocated skills coach. They will achieve the Level 2 Community Activator Coach Apprenticeship Standard with Swimming Specialism alongside sector-specific CPD, such as:

  • STA Level 2 Swim Teacher qualification
  • Lifeguard qualification
  • Pool maintenance and water testing CPD
  • Supporting the PE curriculum (swimming-focused)
  • Behaviour Management
  • Safeguarding/Prevent
  • Mental Health and Wellbeing
  • Digital skills
  • Functional skills in maths and English (where required)

BTEC in:
Sports (grade Pass)

Progression

After successfully completing this apprenticeship, the apprentice may progress into a full-time role such as Swim Teacher, Community Sports Coach, or Aquatics Coach, with a wage increase and greater responsibility based on performance.

There is also the opportunity to progress into roles such as Senior Swim Teacher, Pool Supervisor, or Swim School Coordinator, depending on experience, leadership skills, and training completed.

With further development, the apprentice could specialise in areas such as SEND aquatics, school swimming delivery, or community water safety programmes, or progress onto higher-level qualifications including Level 3/4 coaching or teaching pathways.

Strong performers may be offered ongoing full-time employment, continued wage progression, and access to further qualifications, CPD, and leadership opportunities within swimming and wider sports delivery programmes.
