Community Activator Coach (Level 2) with Swimming Specialism
About the Role
Support children, families and communities through fun, inclusive swimming sessions. Working alongside pool coordinators and swim teachers, you’ll learn to plan, deliver and review sessions while gaining funded swim teaching and lifeguarding qualifications.
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll learn
- Promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and physical activity for individuals and communities.
- Encourage individuals' participation, motivation and to change their behaviour towards sport or physical activity.
- Contribute to inclusive, safe and effective sessions.
- Plan, follow, adapt, and deliver session plans, based on participant needs and feedback.
- Use coaching styles for sport or physical activity sessions meeting the participants needs and motivations.
- Promote the benefits of a lifelong activity habit.
- Use techniques to build rapport with participants.
- Carry out the tasks required before, during and after a community activity.
- Support participants to overcome personal or societal barriers.
- Manage individuals' behaviours within a group setting.
- Work collaboratively with services and other community organisations to run events that make the best use resources.
- Record and store data and information, in line with legislation and organisational policies and procedures.
- Use suitable digital technology to deliver targeted messages to participant groups.
- Adapt communication methods to meet the needs of participants and groups.
- Identify and respond to safeguarding concerns within own scope of role and in line with organisational protocols.
- Support equity, diversity and inclusion in line with legislation and organisational policies.
- Support the mental health and wellbeing of self and participants.
- Comply with health and safety legislation, regulations, risk assessment procedures, guidelines and procedures.
- Participate in personal and professional development.
- Maintain professional boundaries within scope of own role.
- Monitor and review the effectiveness of activity sessions.
- Assist with the resolution of challenges and problems.

Training schedule
Level 2 Community Activator Coach Apprenticeship Standard with Swimming Specialism.
Sector specific CPD, such as:
- Level 2 STA Award in Swim Teaching
- Level 3 Award in Pool Lifeguarding (NPLQ)
- Pool maintenance and water testing CPD
- Supporting the PE curriculum (swimming focussed)
- Behaviour Management
- Safeguarding/Prevent
- Mental Health and Wellbeing
- Digital skills
- Functional skills in maths and English (where required)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

The successful applicant will receive:

- Access to employer training

All applicants will need to demonstrate they can pass an NPLQ swim test which will include the ability to jump/dive into deep water, swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds, swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water
About The Halstead Centre
The Halstead Centre is a small, family-run swimming school, established in 2011, specialising in swimming lessons for children and adults of different ages and abilities.
They operate from their own swimming pool, rather than using a large public leisure-centre pool. The pool was originally a Church of Latter Day Saints building dating back to the 1900s and was converted into a swimming pool around 1980.
Their swimming provision
They offer:
- Children's swimming lessons – 30-minute lessons, Monday–Friday evenings and weekends
- Pre-school swimming
- Parent & child sessions
- Adult swimming lessons
- 1-to-1 swimming lessons
- Small group sizes, with generally 4–5 children per class
- A viewing area for parents
