An exciting opportunity has become available to join the University of Southampton’s outstanding Southampton Sport team as a Sports Operations Assistant (Lifeguard).
Southampton Sport operates across several locations, including the newly extended Jubilee Sport & Recreation Centre on Highfield Campus. Conveniently located for staff, students, and members of the public, the centre offers a wide range of modern sport and fitness facilities, including:
- A large new gym with over 200 Technogym exercise stations
- Inclusive fitness equipment suitable for all abilities
- A 6-lane, 25-metre swimming pool
- A split-level, 150-station fitness suite (TAS Athletes Programme)
- Two sports halls featuring 8 and 4 multi-use courts
- X3 squash courts
- X4 fitness studios including a martial arts studio
- A Technogym indoor cycling studio
- A climbing and bouldering wall
Our wider facilities also include Wide Lane Sports Ground, and the Watersports Centre for students, staff, and the wider community to thrive through inclusive, sustainable, and empowering physical activity experiences.

The University has invested more than £40 million in its sports facilities, delivering an extensive programme of sport, leisure classes, and courses. Our facilities operate seven days a week from 7:00am to 10:00pm, and we are looking for dedicated sports professionals who can consistently provide an exceptional customer experience throughout the year.
The Role
Key Responsibilities Include
As a Lifeguard, you will play an important role within a motivated and professional Southampton Sport team, helping to ensure the safe and efficient day-to-day operation of our facilities. Based primarily at Jubilee Sport & Recreation Centre on Highfield Campus, key responsibilities will include:
- Swimming pool safety and supervision
- Responding to customer enquiries and providing excellent services
- Preparing and maintaining sports equipment
- Providing exceptional cleanliness throughout the facilities
- Ensuring health and safety procedures are always adhered to
- Acting as an ambassador for active lifestyles and Southampton Sport

We are recruiting for full-time positions (36 hours per week), working on a set rota pattern that includes evenings and weekends.
About You
We are looking for professional, motivated, and proactive individuals who thrive as part of a team. Strong customer service skills are essential, as you will often be the first point of contact for customers and will support a wide variety of situations in a professional manner.
A current National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) is essential, although applications from candidates currently working towards the qualification will also be considered.
Please note this role is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and Right to Work verification as part of the recruitment process.
