SQL & BI Operations Lead
Contract: 2 Year Fixed-Term Contract
Salary: £80,000–£90,000
Location: Fully Remote, UK
We are looking for an experienced SQL & BI Operations Lead to take ownership of the day-to-day support, administration and reliability of a Microsoft SQL Server and Business Intelligence environment.
This is a hands-on operational role focused on keeping key databases, data models and reporting services running smoothly, resolving user issues, debugging technical problems and ensuring high availability across business-critical data systems.
The environment includes SQL Server, SSAS, SSIS, Power BI and Microsoft Fabric, with the main focus remaining on SQL and its related technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the technical SME for the SQL and BI environment.
- Ensure maximum uptime and performance across business-critical SQL databases.
- Manage and resolve escalated user issues, support tickets and technical incidents.
- Troubleshoot and debug issues across SQL Server, SSRS, SSAS, SSIS and Power BI.
- Support SQL queries, stored procedures, functions and views.
- Investigate database performance issues and optimise queries.
- Maintain and support scheduled jobs and ETL processes.
- Support and maintain data models and reporting solutions.
- Ensure data from multiple sources remains centralised and accessible.
- Support finance and other business-critical systems that rely on SQL.
- Work with software vendors and internal teams to investigate and resolve system issues.
- Maintain clear technical documentation and support records.
- Keep users informed on the progress of support issues and agreed actions.
- Support occasional out-of-hours work where required for critical incidents or maintenance.
- Work closely with wider IT, Finance and Data teams to ensure a reliable service.

Technical Experience
- 5+ years’ experience working with SQL Server / DBA / Data Platform support.
- Strong SQL skills, including queries, stored procedures, functions and views.
- Strong experience debugging and optimising SQL queries.
- Experience with SSAS, SSIS and SSRS.
- Strong knowledge of Power BI, including Power BI Desktop and Service.
- Good understanding of DAX, MDX and Power Query / M.
- Experience with SQL Server Agent and scheduled jobs.
- Strong understanding of database design and both logical and physical data modelling.
- Experience working with ETL pipelines and dimensional modelling.
- Exposure to Microsoft Fabric, including Lakehouses, Warehouses, Pipelines and OneLake.
- Experience building or supporting analytics pipelines using Fabric, Azure Data Factory or SSIS.
- Good understanding of Windows Server and networking.
- Experience working within a service desk or operational support environment.

What We’re Looking For
This role would suit someone who enjoys being the go-to technical person for a SQL and BI environment.
You should be comfortable supporting users, investigating tickets, debugging complex problems and keeping systems running reliably, rather than purely focusing on new development.
The successful candidate will combine strong SQL and BI technical knowledge with a service-focused approach, strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently across a distributed organisation.
Experience operating within a large, regional or global environment would be particularly beneficial.
