About The Role
We are seeking a skilled and motivated SQL Database Administrator (DBA) to join our Database Services team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the administration, maintenance, performance optimization, and security of Microsoft SQL Server environments. The role requires experience supporting production databases, troubleshooting complex issues, implementing database changes, and ensuring high availability and data integrity. The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with a proactive approach to problem-solving and effective collaboration with application, infrastructure, and support teams.
Person should hold active SC clearance.
- Contract: 4 to 6 months
- Location: Remote
- Pay: attractive pay (inside IR35)
Qualifications
Educational background includes a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or an equivalent practical experience. Candidates should possess 3-5 years of hands-on experience as a SQL Server DBA, with a proven track record of managing production SQL Server environments. Relevant experience includes backup and recovery, database upgrades, migrations, and performance tuning. Technical proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server Administration (preferably 2016/2019/2022), T-SQL development, performance monitoring, high availability solutions, and scripting for automation is essential. Additional certifications such as Microsoft SQL certifications are advantageous.

Responsibilities
Database Administration
- Administer, maintain, and support Microsoft SQL Server environments, ensuring optimal performance and stability.
- Perform installations, configurations, upgrades, patching, and migrations of databases.
- Manage databases, instances, security settings, users, roles, and permissions to uphold security standards.
- Ensure database availability, reliability, and operational stability through proactive monitoring and maintenance.
Performance & Optimization
- Monitor and optimize database performance, investigating bottlenecks and resolving locking issues.
- Analyze execution plans and implement effective indexing strategies to enhance query performance.
- Collaborate with application teams to tune SQL queries and improve overall database efficiency.
Backup, Recovery & High Availability
- Design, implement, and maintain comprehensive backup and recovery strategies to safeguard data integrity.
- Perform database restores and conduct disaster recovery testing to ensure readiness.
- Support and maintain high availability and disaster recovery solutions such as Always On Availability Groups, Log Shipping, Replication, and Database Mirroring where applicable.
Incident & Problem Management
- Troubleshoot and resolve database incidents within agreed service levels, minimizing downtime.
- Conduct root cause analysis for recurring issues to prevent future occurrences.
- Participate in on-call support rotations as required, collaborating with cross-functional teams for timely issue resolution.
Security & Compliance
- Implement and enforce database security best practices to protect sensitive data.
- Ensure compliance with organizational security policies and regulatory standards through regular audits and vulnerability assessments.
- Manage access controls and perform periodic access reviews to maintain security integrity.

Documentation & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive technical documentation, procedures, and operational runbooks.
- Develop automation scripts to streamline routine DBA activities, improving operational efficiency.
- Identify opportunities for performance enhancements, availability improvements, and process optimizations.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of technical standards and best practices.
