Job Title: SQL DBA

Type: Contractor

Location: Glasgow (hybrid)

Duration: 6-12 months initial

Vetting: SC security clearance or eligibility

You will join an established Microsoft SQL Server team consisting of both permanent and contract specialists, reporting directly to the Database Manager. Working in a collaborative and fast-paced environment, you will partner closely with Platform, Linux, End User Device (EUD), and Network Engineering teams, as well as Architects, Test Teams, Product Owners, and Delivery Managers to support, develop, and enhance the organisation's database and wider IT infrastructure.

A key focus of the role will be supporting the successful delivery of both in-flight and upcoming technology initiatives, while ensuring the continued stability, security, and performance of our SQL Server estate. You will provide BAU support across production environments, maintaining high availability and reliability of critical database services, while also driving improvements and enhancements across the platform.

As a senior member of the team, you will bring around five or more years of SQL Server experience across both development and production environments. You will be expected to manage your own workload effectively, demonstrate a strong work ethic, and work within established processes and standards.

Essential Skills

  • You must be able to demonstrate a strong track record as a Microsoft SQL Server Database Administrator, with experience supporting and maintaining enterprise-scale SQL Server environments
  • Proven experience installing, configuring, and administering Microsoft SQL Server 2019.
  • Strong T-SQL development and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience developing and maintaining PowerShell scripts for automation and administration.
  • Good understanding of SQL Server High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions.
  • Hands-on experience with SQL Server Always-On Availability Groups and clustered environments.
  • Experience implementing and managing Log Shipping solutions for disaster recovery.
  • Experience applying SQL Server Service Packs (SPs), Cumulative Updates (CUs), and Windows security patches.
  • Strong understanding of SQL Server security best practices, including Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), Active Directory integration, and security group management.
  • Understanding of TLS/SSL certificates and encryption technologies used to secure SQL Server communications and endpoints.
  • Experience managing and enhancing SQL Server maintenance processes, including backups, integrity checks, index maintenance, housekeeping routines, and automation through T-SQL and stored procedures.
  • Experience implementing and managing SQL Server Auditing and compliance controls.
  • Knowledge of database capacity planning, performance optimisation, and management of database files and virtualised storage platforms.
  • Experience monitoring and maintaining SQL Server production environments to ensure high availability, performance, and reliability.

Operational & Service Management

  • Experience working within Incident, Change, and Problem Management processes in an ITIL-aligned environment.
  • Strong documentation skills, including the creation and maintenance of:
    • SQL Server standards and operational procedures
    • Technical policies and best practice guides
    • Low-Level Designs (LLDs)
    • High-Level Designs (HLDs)
    • Support operational documentation

  • Enterprise policy-based management for SQL Server
