About The Role

We are seeking a skilled and motivated SQL Database Administrator (DBA) to join our Database Services team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the administration, maintenance, performance optimization, and security of Microsoft SQL Server environments. The role requires experience supporting production databases, troubleshooting complex issues, implementing database changes, and ensuring high availability and data integrity. The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with a proactive approach to problem-solving and effective collaboration with application, infrastructure, and support teams.

Person should hold active SC clearance.

  • Contract: 4 to 6 months
  • Location: Remote
  • Pay: attractive pay (inside IR35)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3-5 years of hands-on experience as a SQL Server DBA.
  • Experience managing production SQL Server environments.
  • Proven experience with backup/recovery, database upgrades, migrations, and performance tuning.
  • Technical proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server Administration (2016/2019/2022 preferred).
  • Strong skills in T-SQL development and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of performance monitoring, tuning, and optimization techniques.
  • Experience with high availability and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Familiarity with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and database security practices.
  • Basic understanding of Windows Server fundamentals.
  • Proficiency in PowerShell or other scripting languages for automation tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Administer, maintain, and support Microsoft SQL Server environments, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and security.
  • Perform database installations, configuration, upgrades, patching, and migrations to support evolving business needs.
  • Manage databases, instances, security settings, users, roles, and permissions to uphold data integrity and access controls.
  • Monitor and optimize database performance by analyzing execution plans, indexing strategies, and resolving bottlenecks.
  • Support application teams by providing guidance on SQL query tuning and database optimization techniques.
  • Design, implement, and maintain backup and recovery strategies, including performing restores and disaster recovery testing.
  • Support and maintain high availability and disaster recovery solutions such as Always On Availability Groups, Log Shipping, Replication, and Database Mirroring where applicable.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve database incidents promptly within agreed service levels, conducting root cause analysis for recurring issues.
  • Participate in on-call support rotations as required, ensuring continuous database availability and performance.
  • Implement and enforce database security best practices, perform regular audits, vulnerability assessments, and access reviews to ensure compliance with organizational standards.
  • Maintain comprehensive technical documentation, procedures, and operational runbooks for current and future reference.
  • Develop and enhance automation scripts to streamline routine DBA activities, improving operational efficiency.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in database performance, availability, and operational processes, contributing to process standardization and technical excellence.
