About The Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior SQL Developer to join our dynamic team on a hybrid work pattern based in Stoke-on-Trent. In this pivotal role, you will take ownership of our Microsoft SQL Server environment, leading the design, development, and optimization of critical database solutions. This position offers a unique opportunity to combine hands-on SQL development with technical leadership, influencing database strategy and mentoring junior team members. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in SQL Server management, performance tuning, and database architecture, with a passion for delivering scalable and high-performance solutions that support our growing business needs.
As a Senior SQL Developer, you will be instrumental in maintaining the integrity, security, and availability of our databases. You will collaborate closely with developers, analysts, and stakeholders to ensure technical solutions are robust, efficient, and aligned with business objectives. Your expertise will help optimize database performance, troubleshoot complex issues, and implement best practices across the team. This role provides a platform to demonstrate leadership, technical excellence, and innovation within a supportive environment.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have over five years of experience developing and administering Microsoft SQL Server database solutions. You should possess expert knowledge of T-SQL, including writing stored procedures, functions, views, and triggers, along with a proven track record of performance optimization. Familiarity with relational database design, ETL processes (using SSIS or similar tools), and managing high-volume transactional databases is essential. Experience with SQL Server backup, recovery, disaster recovery strategies, and high-availability technologies such as Always On Availability Groups, Log Shipping, and Replication is required.

Additional qualifications include experience with Azure SQL Database or Azure SQL Managed Instance, familiarity with version control systems like Git, Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, PowerShell scripting, and SQL monitoring tools. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and stakeholder communication skills are crucial. Candidates with mentoring experience, technical leadership capabilities, and contributions to development best practices will be highly regarded.
Responsibilities
- Take ownership of the design, development, and ongoing enhancement of SQL Server database solutions, ensuring they meet business requirements and performance standards.
- Serve as the technical expert for the SQL Server environment, driving best practices, and providing guidance to the development team.
- Maintain and optimize business-critical databases to ensure high levels of performance, security, and availability.
- Develop and enhance complex stored procedures, functions, views, triggers, and database integrations to support various business processes.
- Monitor database health regularly, identifying opportunities for improvement in performance, scalability, and reliability.
- Investigate and resolve complex database issues, including performance bottlenecks, locking, blocking, and data integrity challenges.
- Oversee database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies to ensure business continuity and data integrity.
- Collaborate with developers, analysts, and stakeholders to deliver robust technical solutions aligned with business goals.
- Review code, uphold development standards, and champion best practices across the team to ensure high-quality deliverables.
- Support project delivery through technical input, solution design, and accurate effort estimation, contributing to project planning and execution.
- Stay updated with emerging database technologies and recommend improvements to architecture and development processes.
