About The Role
Leonardo UK is seeking a highly skilled Senior Application Engineer to join the Cyber & Security Solutions Division. This pivotal role involves supporting, maintaining, and enhancing enterprise-level applications that are vital to national security and critical public services. As a Senior Application Engineer, you will play a key role in ensuring the reliability, security, and scalability of mission-critical platforms, particularly focusing on the Leonardo MCX suite of applications used within high-stakes communication environments. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, service management, and product development, to deliver innovative solutions that meet operational and security requirements. The role offers a hybrid working model, combining remote work with on-site collaboration at our Bristol office, facilitating close engagement with team members and stakeholders.
This position provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to projects that support national defense, emergency services, and public safety initiatives. Your expertise will help maintain the integrity and performance of essential communication systems, ensuring they operate seamlessly under demanding conditions. The role also involves mentoring junior engineers, participating in continuous improvement activities, and adhering to strict security and governance standards.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in supporting and configuring enterprise or mission-critical applications, particularly within telecoms, control rooms, or public safety communication environments. A thorough understanding of application lifecycle management, integration patterns, and secure-by-design principles is essential. Candidates should demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate across diverse teams.
Relevant qualifications include industry certifications such as ITIL, AWS, or Azure, along with experience working in secure or defense-related environments. Familiarity with identity management systems like OpenID Connect and OAuth, as well as knowledge of cyber security practices, is highly desirable. Candidates should also have experience supporting applications in hybrid or cloud environments, with exposure to DevOps and CI/CD practices being advantageous.
Core technical competencies include hands-on experience with operational telecoms systems, public safety applications, control room tools, or enterprise software, along with an understanding of application deployment, upgrades, and decommissioning processes. Strong communication skills and a proactive approach to continuous learning are vital to succeed in this role.
Responsibilities
- Support, configure, and enhance the Leonardo MCX suite of applications, ensuring their reliable operation within mission-critical communication environments.
- Deliver engineering tasks within defined work packages, ensuring alignment with user needs, operational communication requirements, security standards, and service-level agreements.
- Contribute to application architecture, configuration, integration, and lifecycle management activities under the guidance of senior engineers.
- Collaborate effectively with stakeholders across engineering, service management, and product teams to resolve technical issues promptly.
- Mentor junior engineers and specialists, supporting their professional development and promoting best practices within the team.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, including automation, documentation, and knowledge sharing to enhance operational efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with engineering governance, ITSM processes, and cyber security policies to uphold high standards of security and quality.
