About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Backend Engineer II to join our Regional Europe & UK team. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in driving data-driven growth initiatives and developing innovative solutions tailored for European markets. Your primary focus will be to enhance and expand Wise’s product offerings within Europe, ensuring they are localized and optimized for diverse customer needs. This position offers a unique opportunity to lead technical development efforts, mentor junior engineers, and influence architectural decisions that shape the future of Wise’s regional expansion. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including product management, design, analytics, risk, and controls, to translate business requirements into scalable, high-performance technical solutions that directly impact millions of users across Europe.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background with expertise in backend development and a passion for building scalable financial solutions. Candidates should have extensive experience with Java and Spring Boot, as well as familiarity with asynchronous messaging systems like Kafka. Proficiency in working with relational databases, SQL query optimization, and schema design is essential. A solid understanding of architectural patterns and best coding practices, along with a keen product mindset, is required. Candidates should demonstrate excellent communication skills, ownership, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Experience in leading technical initiatives, mentoring engineers, and contributing to a positive engineering culture is highly valued. A continuous learner with curiosity and a drive for improvement will thrive in this role.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain high-performance, scalable backend services utilizing Java, Kotlin, Spring Boot, and cloud technologies to support European market needs.
- Build and enhance account-level features such as tax payments, savings accounts, and local payment methods tailored for European customers.
- Collaborate with product managers and cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions that deliver customer value.
- Mentor junior engineers through technical guidance, code reviews, and knowledge sharing to foster a strong engineering culture.
- Drive architectural decisions and define technical strategies for the Regional Expansion Tribe to support Wise’s growth across Europe.
- Participate in deep market research and customer interviews to understand regional needs and develop relevant functionalities.
- Document technical solutions and present data-driven insights to stakeholders, aligning strategies with business objectives and risk appetite.
- Implement best practices in coding, testing, and deployment to ensure the reliability and performance of our services.
