Job Description

This position will drive the adoption of Cryo-Electron Microscopy in Pharma, developing and implementing both long-term profitable growth within the Life Sciences Business and short-term annual operating plan commitments. The role builds strategic portfolio options over a 5-year horizon, identifies current and future Pharma market requirements, evaluates the competitive landscape, and develops strategies to accelerate penetration into the Pharma market and rapidly grow the customer base.

As Senior Director / General Manager Pharma EM, this leader will have broad general management accountability for the Pharma segment, including strategy, portfolio direction, innovation roadmap, market expansion, commercialization, customer adoption, and business performance.

The role requires strong P&L orientation and close collaboration across R&D, Sales, Operations, Marketing, Business Development, and other cross-functional partners to deliver growth, margin, revenue, bookings, customer satisfaction, and market share objectives.

How you will make an impact:

At Thermo Fisher Scientific, our Mission is to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. As Sr. Director / General Manager, Pharma Segment, you will lead the global growth strategy for Electron Microscopy in the pharmaceutical market. You will help pharmaceutical innovators harness some of the world’s most advanced imaging and analytical technologies to better understand biological structures, drug targets and therapeutic mechanisms. Building on our position in drug discovery, you will identify and develop new opportunities across the pharmaceutical value chain, including formulation, process development and manufacturing. By enabling deeper scientific insight, better development decisions and more robust pharmaceutical processes, your work will ultimately help customers accelerate the development and delivery of more effective therapies to patients around the world. Working across a global, highly matrixed organization, you will mobilize commercial, product and technical teams around a shared strategy and build the Pharma segment into a high-growth business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and execute the global Pharma growth strategy for Electron Microscopy, translating market trends, customer insights and emerging opportunities into clear priorities, initiatives and measurable business outcomes.
  • Own the growth agenda and business results for the segment with strong P&L ownership, setting ambitious goals, monitoring progress and making the strategic and commercial trade-offs required to drive sustainable revenue and profitability.
  • Build deep relationships with leading pharmaceutical customers, developing a strong understanding of their workflows, decision processes and unmet needs and translating those insights into differentiated customer value propositions.
  • Expand Electron Microscopy into new pharmaceutical applications, building on our foundation in drug discovery to explore and develop opportunities in formulation, process development, manufacturing and other emerging workflows.
  • Develop and execute effective go-to-market strategies for global pharmaceutical accounts, working closely with regional commercial teams to accelerate adoption and strengthen our position in the market.
  • Shape portfolio and product strategy based on customer and market requirements, partnering across product management, applications and other functions to support the development and commercialization of compelling solutions.
  • Lead and inspire a distributed global team and broader matrix organization, creating alignment around the strategy, establishing clear priorities and enabling colleagues across functions and regions to execute effectively, while promoting inclusion, innovation and accountability.
  • Champion a customer-first, agile and continuously improving culture, adapting strategies and priorities as customer needs, market dynamics and technologies evolve while maintaining strong accountability for results.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
