About The Role
Hackajob is collaborating with Tesco to connect them with exceptional professionals for this role. As a Backend Development Engineer, you will be an integral part of an agile team comprising industry-leading engineers tasked with defining and developing Tesco's Experience API (xAPI). This API powers a variety of Tesco's shopping experiences, including mobile applications, store systems, and internal-facing platforms. Your role will involve designing scalable, maintainable, and high-performance backend systems that support millions of users globally. You will work closely with product managers and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into innovative technical solutions, ensuring a seamless and engaging shopping experience for Tesco's customers.
In this position, you will utilize your expertise in modern backend technologies, cloud computing, and API development to build robust services that are secure, observable, and highly available. Your work will directly impact the customer journey, from product discovery to purchase and post-sale interactions. The solutions you develop will have a broad reach, supporting Tesco's vision of delivering a frictionless shopping experience across multiple channels and devices.

Qualifications
We are seeking candidates with a strong passion for technology and extensive experience in backend development. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 7+ years of professional experience as a backend software developer, with at least 4 years dedicated to building scalable backend systems using JavaScript, TypeScript, and Node.js. Familiarity with modern JavaScript frameworks such as Next.js and React.js, along with testing frameworks like Jest, Mocha.js, and Cucumber, is essential. Candidates should possess in-depth knowledge of microservices architecture, cloud deployment (Azure, AWS, GCP), and container orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes.
Proficiency in building and maintaining REST and GraphQL APIs, experience with distributed messaging systems like Kafka or RabbitMQ, and caching technologies such as Redis are highly desirable. A strong understanding of DevOps practices, Agile methodologies, and test-driven development (TDD, BDD, ATDD) will be instrumental in succeeding in this role. Candidates must demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills, the ability to write secure and maintainable code, and a collaborative mindset to thrive within a fast-paced, innovative environment.
Responsibilities
- Develop, deploy, and maintain scalable backend systems utilizing JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js, and cloud technologies.
- Collaborate with product managers to understand business requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
- Write clean, secure, and maintainable code, adhering to best practices and coding standards.
- Automate deployment, testing, and monitoring processes to ensure high-quality deliverables.
- Profile, optimize, and refactor code to improve performance and reliability.
- Implement instrumentation for monitoring and observability of systems.
- Apply principles such as SOLID and cohesion to produce well-structured software solutions.
- Lead discussions on system design and contribute to architectural decisions.
- Support production systems by resolving incidents, performing root cause analysis, and implementing fixes.
- Share knowledge and mentor junior team members to foster continuous learning and improvement.
- Produce proof of concepts to evaluate new tools and technologies that can enhance development processes.
