Sr. PostgreSQL DBA - United Kingdom
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Sr. PostgreSQL DBA based in United Kingdom.
This role offers an opportunity for an experienced PostgreSQL database professional to support critical enterprise technology environments.
- Responsibility: You will be responsible for maintaining reliable, secure, and high-performing database platforms across Linux and Windows environments.
- Expertise: Your expertise will help ensure database availability, performance, data integrity, and operational resilience.
- Design and Automation: You will design and maintain database objects while developing automation that improves data-loading and administrative processes.
- Additional Tasks: The role also involves performance monitoring, troubleshooting, backup and recovery, security management, and production support.
You will collaborate with development and technology teams to provide database best practices and resolve complex data issues efficiently.
Experience with AWS and ESRI environments is an advantage for professionals looking to contribute to sophisticated, enterprise-scale systems.
Accountabilities
- Database Management: Create, configure, maintain, and optimize PostgreSQL database objects, including triggers, indexes, schemas, and relational structures.
- Automation: Develop automation solutions to streamline database administration and data-loading processes while improving operational efficiency.
- Installation and Configuration: Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain PostgreSQL databases across both Linux and Windows environments.
- Performance Monitoring: Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks and potential issues proactively, and implement solutions to maintain reliable and efficient operations.
- High Availability: Support high availability initiatives and ensure database environments remain resilient and accessible to business-critical applications.
- Security Management: Manage database users, roles, permissions, and security controls while maintaining strong data integrity and following established best practices.
- Maintenance and Recovery: Schedule and perform routine database maintenance, backups, recovery activities, and disaster recovery procedures to protect critical data.
- PL/pgSQL Development: Develop and maintain PL/pgSQL stored procedures and functions using loops, conditional logic, variables, and related programming constructs.
- Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot and resolve production database and data-related issues promptly, helping minimize operational disruption.
- Guidance: Provide database architecture and best-practice guidance to development and technology teams and support effective implementation of database solutions.
- Cloud and Specialized Platforms: Contribute to database initiatives within cloud environments, including AWS, and support specialized platforms such as ESRI Enterprise Geodatabase when applicable.

Requirements
- Experience: 5+ years of professional experience working as a PostgreSQL Database Administrator.
- Skills:
- Strong hands-on experience installing, configuring, upgrading, maintaining, and troubleshooting PostgreSQL databases.
- Proven experience supporting database environments running on both Linux and Windows operating systems.
- Strong PL/pgSQL experience, particularly with loops, conditional statements, variables, stored procedures, and functions.
- Experience managing database objects such as triggers, indexes, schemas, and relational structures.
- Solid understanding of database performance monitoring, optimization, high availability, backup, recovery, and disaster recovery practices.
- Experience with database security, including user access, permissions, roles, and data integrity controls.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve production issues efficiently.
- Ability to develop automation that improves database administration and data-management workflows.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to provide practical technical guidance to development and engineering teams.
- Experience working independently in a fully distributed environment while collaborating effectively with cross-functional technology teams.
Preferred
- Experience working with AWS environments.
- Experience with ESRI environments, particularly ESRI Enterprise Geodatabase.
