Amazon is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Sr. Solutions Design Engineer. This individual will deep-dive and challenge current processes, equipment, and procedures, in our European fulfillment network, in order to come up with creative and implementable process improvement initiatives. This individual will also design and develop new and existing fulfillment center layouts.
About the Role
A successful candidate will have an established background in developing high-performance physical systems, a strong technical problem-solving ability, excellent project management skills, and an internal motivation to achieve results in a fast-paced and often ambiguous environment. The Solutions Design Engineer would be an agile natural self-starter with the ability to keep relentlessly driving projects and various functional teams and individuals at all levels of the organization in order to be successful.
Would you like an opportunity to travel and work in multiple countries and cultures? The role could be based in UK, Germany, Poland, or Italy with up to 50% of time on job travel, either domestically or to other countries.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Own and direct complex, high-visibility programs involving multiple concurrent projects across European and international fulfillment networks
- Provide strategic oversight of project management services, design services, and external partner performance for sophisticated automation initiatives
- Lead design and engineering efforts for complex projects with minimal management oversight, making high-judgment decisions on technical approach and resource allocation
- Develop and manage comprehensive program budgets, oversee spend approvals, and drive cost optimization strategies
- Align and influence external project managers, architects, design consultants, contractors, and subcontractors to deliver in line with Amazon priorities
- Drive horizontal business initiatives and process improvements that impact multiple teams and geographies
- Lead design evaluations, external partner selections, contract negotiations, and project procurement functions
- Develop measurable program strategies and ensure appropriate resources are allocated to achieve organizational goals
- Build and maintain crucial relationships with customers, suppliers, and external partners; lead complex negotiations
- Actively recruit top engineering talent and provide advanced mentorship to develop Operations Engineers at all levels
- Contribute to long-term strategic planning and influence organizational priorities through data-driven recommendations
- Champion diversity and inclusion initiatives within the engineering organization
- Represent engineering perspectives in senior leadership forums and business reviews

A Day in the Life
You will work on the design of multiple retrofits or conversions of existing Amazon Fulfillment Centers throughout the year. During the early project phases of project design and bidding, you will predominantly work in an Amazon office or from your home, and traveling to site periodically to meet with other stakeholders.
You will be progressively given more important and extending responsibilities, within your projects and aside from it, by taking the lead on other business horizontal tasks and supporting the whole OPS Engineering community in delivering high-quality projects. Other business horizontal activities could include diversity initiatives and technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) roles. You will be constantly helped by the team, will respect and leverage diverse points of view and focus on inclusion of new members.
Basic Qualifications
- Experience in technical leadership for industrial engineering projects or programs
- Experience with program management spanning planning, execution, and project delivery
- Speak, write, and read fluently in English at C1 level or above
- Experience and strong technical background in relevant fields of automated or non-automated material handling equipment
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Structural, Civil Engineering, Architecture (or country equivalent)

Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in engineering, mechanical, operations, supply chain, business administration, or equivalent STEM field
- Experience in Lean Management, Six Sigma, and other operations engineer tools
- Experience using one or more of the following CAD technologies: AutoCAD, Rhino, Revit, SolidWorks, CREO, BIM360, SketchUp, or KeyShot
- Experience in Logistics, Distribution, or Fulfillment processes
- Experience in managing cool chains, refrigeration equipment, and installations, temperature-controlled environments
- Additional language skills (French, German, Polish, Arabic, Portuguese, Turkish, Chinese (Mandarin), Afrikaans, and Zulu) are beneficial for cross-regional project coordination across EMEA
