Strategic Account Manager - UK Gov
Can you build trusted relationships with the most senior leaders in UK central government — and turn them into long-term, mission-shaping partnerships?
Do you want to shape how the public sector procures, in one of Amazon Business’s fastest-growing and most strategically important verticals?
This is a senior, high-visibility role for a proven operator who thrives in the room with the most senior leaders in Whitehall and wants to shape how the public sector procures.
Customers rely on Amazon for convenient access to millions of products delivered right to their doorstep. The Amazon Business team is reimagining that experience to fit the specific needs of the UK’s public sector — the central government departments, agencies, and arm’s-length bodies that run the country’s critical services, alongside local authorities, combined authorities, blue light services, and the wider public estate. From Whitehall departments and national agencies to councils, emergency services, and the metro-mayor combined authorities now taking on devolved budgets, these customers exist to serve citizens — and we exist to help them do it more efficiently, transparently, and cost-effectively.
Amazon Business helps public sector organizations reshape their procurement with cost and time savings, greater productivity, and insightful purchasing analytics. Customers benefit from a curated site experience, Business Prime, business-only pricing and selection, multi-user accounts, approvals workflows, purchasing system and framework integrations, payment solutions, dedicated customer support, and more. In an environment of constrained budgets, heightened scrutiny of public spend, and rising demand for frontline services, every pound saved on procurement is a pound that can be redirected to delivering for citizens.
B2B procurement is undergoing a digital transformation, and nowhere is the opportunity greater than across UK central government. As a Strategic Account Manager in the UK Gov team, you will own the most strategically significant customers in our book — including major central government departments — and help shape how Amazon Business shows up across the wider public sector. This is a senior, strategic role built for someone who can sit across the table from a Permanent Secretary, Director General, CDIO, CFO, or Commercial Director at a central government department and build a long-term, multi-year partnership rooted in their mission and their commercial and digital agenda — and who can raise the bar for how the rest of the team approaches strategic account development.
Credibility at the most senior levels of central government is central to this role. You will build and sustain relationships with senior stakeholders across Whitehall, translate departmental priorities into a compelling Amazon Business proposition, and influence procurement and digital strategy at the executive level. Being comfortable and effective in CxO and Permanent-Secretary-level conversations — earning the trust of senior civil servants and commercial leaders, and leading those conversations autonomously — is a key attribute for success.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

It’s always Day 1 at Amazon. The UK Gov vertical is one of the most strategically important growth areas within Amazon Business, and we need a senior operator to bring their creative spirit, customer obsession, and best ideas to shape how we serve a sector that operates differently to commercial customers. You will help define the playbook, not just execute against it, and have a lasting impact on the way the UK’s public services are procured and delivered.
A successful Strategic Account Manager will be a confident, autonomous self-starter with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a track record of building strategic customer relationships at the most senior levels, and genuine curiosity about the operational and political realities of central government. You will be motivated by public impact as much as commercial outcomes — and will see no tension between the two. You will also be the kind of senior team member who lifts those around you, mentoring junior Account Managers and raising the standard of how we engage with the sector.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Own C-suite relationships in central government — build executive-level relationships with the most senior stakeholders across UK central government departments and agencies (Permanent Secretaries, Director Generals, CDIOs, CFOs, Commercial Directors).
- Own and grow a portfolio of the most strategically significant UK public sector customers — central government departments, local authorities, combined authorities, and blue light services.
- Lead high-stakes commercial and strategic conversations autonomously, positioning Amazon Business against departmental priorities, spending controls, and transformation agendas.
- Shape the UK Gov vertical strategy with the team lead, championing where Amazon Business can do more for customers.
- Evolve the proposition to public sector realities — procurement frameworks (e.g. Crown Commercial Service), the Procurement Act, spend controls, and governance.
- Engage emerging combined authorities and metro-mayor bodies taking on devolved budgets — a first-mover opportunity to shape platform needs.
- Own strategic customer and territory planning; forecast accurately and represent UK Gov in leadership reviews.
- Advise customers on Amazon Business solutions (100+) to free up frontline resources, and surface new product opportunities internally.
- Maintain deep expertise on the UK public sector and competitive procurement landscape.
- Mentor junior Account Managers and meet or exceed targets for customers and Amazon Business.
A Day in the Life
Most days blend deep customer work with cross-border teamwork. You might spend the morning prepping a QBR with a major central government department, jump into a Pan-EU sync with colleagues on public sector procurement, then talk strategy with a department's Commercial Director or CDIO about how Amazon Business supports their transformation agenda. You'll own your accounts autonomously while working as one team across five countries — mixing strategic planning, internal influencing, and time in front of senior customers.
