The Students' Rugby Football Union (SRFU) Board of Trustees Treasurer
The Students' Rugby Football Union (SRFU) is seeking a qualified accountant to join our Board of Trustees as Treasurer, succeeding the current postholder. This is an unpaid, volunteer role, central to the financial governance and long-term sustainability of the SRFU.

The Students’ Rugby Football Union (SRFU) is a national Constituent Body (CB) of the Rugby Football Union (RFU). The SRFU is the representative body for university rugby union in England with a particular responsibility for the governance, development, and growth of the game in Universities. We work in close partnership with both the RFU Player Pipeline Team and British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) to ensure that there is a coordinated approach to the development and delivery of higher education rugby. It is a charitable company registered at both Companies House (Company Number 04240029) and with the Charities Commission (Charity Number 1087986). The SRFU is led by a team of committed volunteers and supported by one part-time employee. The three officers and trustees have a responsibility for understanding the environment in which the charity is operating and for leading the charity in fulfilling its purposes as effectively as possible with the resources available, including governance, budgeting and strategy. The charitable purpose of the Students’ RFU is “the advancement of amateur sport”. The charitable objects of the Students’ RFU is “To administer, foster, encourage, extend and control rugby union football (“the game”) for the moral, mental and physical development of students at universities and other institutions of higher education in England.

What are we looking for?
A recognised accountancy qualification (ACCA, ACA, CIMA or equivalent), with current or recent membership of a professional body
- Experience of financial oversight, management accounting, reporting or charity finance
- Sound understanding of financial governance, controls and statutory reporting
Requirements
- Knowledge of Charity Law and Company Law as they relate to financial matters
- Able to interpret and clearly communicate financial information to non-financial colleagues
- Familiarity with cloud accounting software (e.g. Xero)
- Experience of operating as a Trustee / Non-Executive Director
- Able to work effectively with the Trustee Board, Full Committee and wider SRFU network
- Passion for, or genuine interest in, university rugby

What will you be doing?
We are looking for someone with a recognised accounting qualification (ACCA, ACA, CIMA or equivalent) and experience in financial oversight, reporting or charity finance, who can provide sound financial stewardship to the Board, ensure robust financial controls, and support the organisation's strategic decision-making.

This is an exciting opportunity to take on a key governance role at a small, ambitious charity, helping to safeguard the financial health of the Students' RFU and facilitate the development of opportunities to grow the game of rugby union in the higher education sector.
The SRFU is led by a team of committed volunteers and supported by one part-time employee. The three officers and trustees have a responsibility for understanding the environment in which the charity is operating and for leading the charity in fulfilling its purposes as effectively as possible with the resources available, including governance, budgeting and strategy.
Our governing documentation sets out that the SRFU Hon Treasurer is also a member of the SRFU Trustee Board as a trustee. The Board composition is currently made up of the following members, all of whom are volunteers:
- Chairperson
- Company Secretary
- Hon. Treasurer
- 2 representatives of the Students’ RFU on RFU Council
- Student Voice Representatives
- Female Game Representatives
- Portfolio Trustees recruited for their skills and experience
The trustee board is supported by a Full Committee which includes representatives from our partner organisations (RFU and BUCS) and a number of sub-committees and task specific working groups.
