About the Role
We’re looking for an experienced Backend Engineer for our Consumer Onboarding team. This is a unique opportunity to have a massive impact, helping a growing number of customers around the world choose Wise to move their money without borders.
The Consumer Onboarding team is dedicated to guiding personal customers through setting up their Wise account and resolving their first international money needs in a way that’s clear, easy, and delightful.
You’ll lead a team of talented engineers, collaborating daily with product managers, data analysts, and designers to continuously improve our onboarding flows and user journeys – making them faster, more intuitive, and more scalable.
Your Mission
As one of the most Senior Engineers in the Consumer Onboarding team, your responsibilities will include:
- Technical & Product Leadership: Work closely with the Product Manager and Engineering Lead of your team to shape the roadmap, set the technical and product vision, and ensure the team delivers on product goals in a robust and scalable way.

- Understanding customer problems

System Ownership & Performance: Own the health of systems and services in your team, ensuring our systems remain maintainable, scalable, and performant to support our growth and scale.

Cross-Team Alignment: Collaborate with other senior engineers and engineering leads across the Onboarding squad, and all of Wise, to align your team’s work with the wider technical strategy.

Mentoring & Growth: Coach and mentor engineers in your team to support their technical growth and be a force multiplier.
Requirements
A bit about you:
- Experience working with and building:
- Distributed, high-scalability systems
- Microservices architectures
- A strong product and customer mindset, with experience building customer-facing products.
- Strong technical expertise in OOP languages (Java or similar) and modern technology stacks.
- Skills for mentoring and teaching others through your work, acting as a force multiplier.
- Ability to communicate clearly, translating complex technical concepts for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience working effectively in cross-functional teams, collaborating with:
- Designers
- Product managers
- Analysts

What Do We Offer?
Compensation
Starting salary:
- £111,000 – £145,000 per year
- RSUs included
