We’re looking for a Staff Data Scientist excited to help build the bank of the future. This is a senior individual contributor role for someone who combines deep technical expertise with strong commercial judgement and can apply both to Monzo’s most important and complex challenges.

All our data lives in one place and is super easy to use. 90% of day-to-day data-driven decisions are covered by self-serve analytics through Looker, which gives data scientists the headspace to focus on more impactful business questions and analyses.
As a Staff Data Scientist, you’ll lead efforts on strategically important, business-critical problems. You’ll apply judgement in areas of organisational or technical complexity, steward initiatives end-to-end, and focus your hands-on contribution where it can create the greatest impact. You’ll be a trusted technical partner to senior leaders, raise the bar for Data Science across Monzo, and build capability in others through coaching, reusable approaches and clear standards.

🔑You’ll play a key role by...
- Shape and lead the data strategy for a large domain or collective, connecting customer and commercial goals to a clear portfolio of high-impact Data Science work
- Identify, frame and lead strategically important problems where the path is ambiguous, dependencies span teams, and decisions involve meaningful customer, commercial, regulatory or operational trade-offs
- Partner with senior leaders across product, engineering, ML, design, research, risk and operations, bringing an independent technical perspective that influences strategy and turns it into measurable outcomes
- Establish measurement strategies and metric maps that clarify how customer behaviour, product changes and business outcomes connect, enabling teams to test assumptions and make better decisions faster
- Set and evolve best practices for experimentation, causal inference, forecasting, optimisation and decision science, choosing methods that are proportionate to the decision and its risks
- Remain hands-on where your expertise is most valuable: exploring complex data, designing analyses and experiments, building models or prototypes, and resolving the hardest technical questions
- Steward critical data products and initiatives end-to-end, ensuring they are robust, well-governed, clearly documented and adopted by the people who need them
- Balance pace and analytical rigour, making pragmatic trade-offs while protecting the quality, reproducibility and interpretability of your work
- Raise Data Science standards across Monzo through technical direction, proposals, reviews, reusable methods and thoughtful challenge
- Coach and mentor data scientists and analytics engineers, using live projects and wider discipline initiatives to build sustainable capability beyond your own individual output

- You have an exceptional track record of leading complex, business-critical Data Science work from ambiguous problem framing through to measurable outcomes
- You have shaped strategy across a large product or business domain and can influence senior leaders through clear, independent judgement
- You bring deep expertise across several Data Science disciplines and can set the technical direction for work involving significant complexity, uncertainty or risk
- You repeatedly create clarity across organisational boundaries, resolve difficult dependencies and turn long-term strategy into decisive action
- You communicate complex ideas, assumptions and risks with clarity, and hold a consistently high bar for analytical quality, governance and reproducibility
- You remain a highly credible hands-on practitioner with SQL and Python, while raising standards and multiplying the impact of experienced colleagues
