Staff Engineer 🧑 💻

Fully Remote | UK based 📍
Paying £100k–£130k 💰

Oliver Bernard are working with a high-growth technology business going through a significant period of product and engineering transformation.

They’re looking for an experienced Staff Engineer / Principal Engineer / Data Architect to take ownership of data architecture and technical strategy across a growing Data function.

This is not a hands-on Data Engineering role and not a people management position.

They’re looking for someone who has been operating at Staff, Principal or Architect level for multiple years and is comfortable stepping away from day-to-day engineering while remaining deeply technical.

The role is centred around architecture, technical strategy, stakeholder engagement and supporting a Data team of around 10 people.

What you'll be doing

You'll work closely with a specialist Data function, providing senior technical direction across the wider data environment and helping shape how data platforms evolve.

You'll be expected to:

  • Own and drive data architecture, technical strategy and target-state roadmaps
  • Set architectural direction across the Data function
  • Design and review complex data architectures and help teams make the right technical decisions
  • Work across OLTP, OLAP, data platforms, analytics and data foundations
  • Support Data Engineers and technical leads with architecture, system design and complex technical problems
  • Stay close to technical detail without being responsible for day-to-day production coding
  • Guide the team through architectural change, technical debt and platform evolution
  • Help establish scalable approaches to data modelling, governance, availability and reliability
  • Work closely with Product Directors, Engineering Leadership and commercial stakeholders
  • Influence senior stakeholders and gain buy-in for architectural approaches and technical strategy
  • Mentor and coach senior members of the Data team
  • Lead architectural reviews and challenge proposed solutions
  • Help shape the data foundations required for an increasingly AI-driven engineering environment
  • Consider the scalability, security, compliance and cost implications of data architecture and platform decisions

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What we're looking for

Several years operating at Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer, Architect or equivalent level
Proven experience setting architectural direction across complex data environments
Strong experience with data architecture and system design
Experience spanning multiple areas of the data landscape rather than one specific discipline
Strong understanding of OLTP and OLAP environments
Experience with modern data platforms and the wider data ecosystem
Comfortable working across technologies such as Python, Snowflake, dbt, Power BI and Tableau
Comfortable stepping away from hands-on engineering while remaining highly technical
Experience supporting Data Engineers and technical leads with architecture and design decisions
No desire for people management — this is a purely technical leadership role
Strong ability to influence without direct authority
Comfortable moving between deep technical discussions and senior business/commercial stakeholders
Strong commercial awareness around data platform decisions, scalability and cost
Pragmatic approach to architecture, balancing technical quality with business priorities

Ideal background

The ideal candidate will have worked in a similarly sized product-led organisation (roughly 250–1,000 employees). This is important because in larger organisations, ownership of OLTP, OLAP, analytics, data platforms and engineering is often split across multiple senior specialists. We're therefore looking for someone who has had the breadth of exposure to bring these areas together architecturally, rather than someone who has necessarily owned every layer themselves. Experience working through scaling, transformation or significant architectural change would be particularly relevant.

This role isn't

  • A hands-on Data Engineering role where most of your time is spent writing pipelines or code
  • People management
  • An architecture role where you simply produce designs and hand them over
  • A role focused solely on one data discipline or technology
  • A purely theoretical architecture position

“Hands-on” here means staying close to the architecture, system design, technical problems and the Data team, not spending your time building the underlying data infrastructure yourself.

Technology

Python | Snowflake | dbt | Power BI | Tableau | OLTP | OLAP | Data Architecture

You don't need to have used every technology listed. Strong architectural experience across complex data environments is more important than being a specialist in one particular tool.

The opportunity

This is an opportunity to have significant technical influence across a specialist Data function, helping shape the architecture and foundations that support both the wider product and the company's evolving AI capabilities.

If you've been operating at Staff, Principal or Architect level for several years, enjoy solving complex architectural problems, and want to move away from day-to-day data engineering without moving away from technology, then please apply now!
