We are looking for a Staff Engineer

We are looking for a Staff Engineer to lead the technical delivery of complex software, data, and AI projects, focusing on the Defence sector. This role combines deep technical expertise with project leadership and client engagement. You will quickly grasp new problem spaces, work with domain experts, and deliver robust, production-ready solutions to complex challenges across software engineering and specialised domains.

If this sounds like you, we can't wait to hear from you!

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership and Engineering

  • Own the technical direction and architecture of projects, making sound engineering decisions.
  • Oversee the delivery of high-quality, maintainable and production-ready code.
  • Design and develop backend services, APIs, data pipelines and integrations.
  • Build AI systems, including solutions using Large Language Models and machine learning.
  • Review code and technical designs
  • Apply software engineering best practice including Git, Docker, CI/CD and cloud deployment.

Defence and Domain Expertise

  • Rapidly understand unfamiliar and complex scientific, engineering, mathematical, operational and business domains to solve difficult client problems.
  • Develop sufficient domain understanding to challenge assumptions, identify the underlying problem and make informed technical decisions.
  • Work effectively with Defence clients and subject matter experts, understanding the importance of operational context, technical constraints and real-world application.
  • Apply strong analytical and first-principles thinking to problems involving complex systems, data and physical or operational environments.
  • Bring relevant experience and understanding of the Defence sector to help shape credible and practical technical solutions.

Project and Client Delivery

  • Lead project delivery teams, providing technical direction and removing blockers.
  • Build strong client relationships and lead client meetings, workshops and technical discussions.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand operational and business needs and translate these into appropriate technical strategies.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
