Staff Engineer – Pricing
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Engineer – Pricing based in United Kingdom.
This is a high-impact staff-level engineering role focused on building the pricing infrastructure behind a modern energy transaction platform. You’ll own the backend and data-heavy systems responsible for pricing real energy contracts, where correctness directly affects financial outcomes and performance builds customer trust. You’ll shape a new Pricing API from initial architecture through production readiness and eventual third-party access. The role combines backend engineering, numerical systems, data, reliability, and product thinking in a highly consequential domain. You’ll also lead significant architectural decoupling, establish engineering standards, and influence technical direction across teams without relying on formal management authority. The environment is remote-first, collaborative, and focused on using modern AI-assisted engineering workflows to increase team productivity.
Accountabilities:
- Build, evolve, and operate the Pricing API, ensuring it is fast, reliable, accurate, explainable, and ready for third-party consumption.
- Lead the extraction of pricing logic from surrounding systems into a dedicated service, establishing clear and maintainable boundaries with neighboring teams.
- Manage significant architectural migrations and decoupling initiatives while protecting existing functionality and minimizing disruption to dependent systems.
- Own pricing reliability by designing detection, monitoring, and alerting systems that identify incorrect or slow prices before they reach customers.
- Ensure every pricing failure can be understood and explained, creating robust mechanisms for diagnosing why a quote cannot be produced.
- Improve pricing performance and reduce quote latency across the customer experience through architectural and technical optimization.
- Act as a senior technical authority within the pricing domain, contributing to architecture decisions, design reviews, engineering standards, and development practices.
- Raise the effectiveness of the wider engineering team through pairing, knowledge sharing, technical guidance, and AI- and multi-agent-assisted development workflows.
- Serve as a key escalation point for live pricing incidents and convert operational learnings into durable architectural and product improvements.
- Balance speed, numerical correctness, reliability, cost, and explainability when making technical and product engineering decisions.
- Influence technical direction across teams, negotiating service boundaries and aligning stakeholders without direct management responsibility.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Requirements:
- Deep production experience with Python backend engineering, including designing, building, and owning APIs at scale.
- Demonstrated experience taking technical ownership of production systems and acting as a senior escalation point when complex backend issues arise.
- Proven experience leading a significant decoupling, migration, or architectural transformation of a live system without disrupting critical dependencies.
- Strong proficiency with FastAPI and SQL, ideally within data-intensive or analytics-heavy systems where numerical correctness has direct financial consequences.
- Experience designing systems where data accuracy, performance, reliability, and explainability are critical requirements.
- Ability to establish technical direction across organizational boundaries and negotiate effective service contracts and ownership models with neighboring teams.
- Strong product engineering judgment, with the ability to understand how pricing information is consumed and deliberately balance speed, accuracy, and explainability.
- Experience using AI coding tools such as Claude or similar technologies as part of everyday engineering workflows.
- Ability to design and implement multi-agent engineering workflows that improve development throughput across a team, rather than simply using AI tools individually.
- Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence senior engineers and stakeholders without relying on formal authority.
- Experience with energy pricing, fintech, financial systems, or modern utility platforms is desirable.
- Experience building APIs intended for consumption by external third parties is a plus.
- Familiarity with AWS and serverless architectures, including Lambda, event-driven services, and PostgreSQL on RDS, is beneficial.
- Experience with Polars or a demonstrated track record of optimizing numerical and data-processing code is an advantage.
